  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ND filters/

Formatt hot mirror filters all the way. Be very careful about vari-ND's...they tend to be very soft especially at 4k.

Regarding the MB/follow focus: Oconnor O-Box is the BEST MB I have used. Depending on what lenses you have helps to determine if you really need a follow focus. I had the Cinevate Durus, but once I switched to still lenses, I sold it because it was easier for me to pull directly on the lens barrel. The Durus is well built, lifetime warranty, and I loved it.

I too am using Schneider NDs and am happy with them. I have both Plantinums and regular depending on the strength of the glass.

The key to the Platinums is patience, don't try to order them the same week you need them.

Thanks Chris.
In tests I found IR was only an issue with .9ND and above.
So was thinking of getting a .9 Hot Mirror ND and then .3 and .6 HD NDs, and stacking them when necessary.
do you see any problems with this [bearing in mind budget is tight]?

I try to never stack filters unless absolutely necessary. The more you put in front of any glass, the chances increase that your image becomes less sharp. Letus actually just released a MB that has a variable polarizer and ND built in, just don't know how sharp it is.

+1 on Formatts

For varible NDs I bought cheapie chinese (like: $25) - just fine if you are prepped to CC out the color cast (pinkish in my case). ebay is full of these...

if you can find schneider platinum, those are the ones to get. I have a set up to 1.8nd and they are great. no color cast.

Shane,

I am getting a strong Cyan cast in mine. It can be graded out but I am impressed that you get no color cast. I might send mine back.

When I shoot with my Platinum NDs I generally adjust the green/magenta tint accordingly. Takes pretty good care of it. I'm not really a filter snob but they've worked well and I'm happy with them. I have .6 and .9 and had a 1.2 and 1.8 on order but those took so damn long I canceled my order a while back. Will look into different filters for the 1.2 and 1.8. Phil Holland did some pretty extensive testing and posted some great info on REDUSER... anyone remember which thread that was?

I ordered a set or Formatts after researching them on RedUser extensively. I would have to warn about getting a bad batch. I ordered .9-1.8. I saw noticeable image tint and degradation as you ramped up to 1.5, and the 1.8 was SO OFF, I had to balance to 10,000K to get a grey card to match, not to mention the tint. I'm sure there are some that work great, but I would try to test the set you receive specifically before you walk away.

I sent mine back to Formatt for a quality check. They agreed to perform a quality check and covered the shipping to the UK, but they are taking awhile to get them back to me. I have jobs passing by that need them.

I used to get a color cast with other filters but these have been great. I just bought a .6 and a .9 on ebay so my package is complete.
I have used the hot mirror as well and that works but I only have a 2 stage matte I. So it was limiting.

I am getting color casts in the 1.8 and 2.1 Would not expect to see any issues in NDs with values 1.2 and lower in the Scheider range. With dragon chip likely to be more sensitive I really wish Red would help out here. It all makes me wish for a chip with variable gain that I could dial in a real ASA setting.
