Hiya
I'm wondering what nd filter is best for canon lenses. It will be mostly when I'm using a portable setup without a mattebox.

After some research it seems that the Tiffen Variable ND Filter is the best canditate but I would like to hear what you guys think.

Here is a review of several nd filters.

Thanks

Formatt have just brought out a variable ND with a larger front element - should be useful for ultra wide lenses. Think they are called Multi Stop, and possibly come in both glass and optical CR39 resin versions if they are like the new ProStop NDs.

I have an 82mm Heliopan Vario ND-w-front threads (imported from Germany ... Foto Meyr ... hell of a lot less than what they charge for them here in the US) that we used on a Nikon 24-70 zoom-w-a collapsible rubber lens hood for a recent shoot in Italy. It worked great. You just can't max out the ND, or you will get some optical anamolies.

Have any of the variable ND filters been suitable for longer focal lengths, like over 100mm? I've got a Genus VariND that is totally unacceptable on the 70-200mm, but looks more or less okay on the 24-70mm.

I read more and have found several bad reviews of them for zooms. That doesn't sound very promising. Should I maybe just get fixed nd filter strenght instead. what about lee filters with holders (not screw in). They are a bit aquard but more flexible I guess.

Variable ND filters are not true ND filters, they are opposed polarizing filters, and as a result can cause strange color casts.

But the color shifts are very limited if you do not close them completely. Even when they are at their worst it's nothing the little white balance color picker in RCXP can't handle.

Small still lenses and varible ND, is the way to go if you want to be quick.

VND's are crap for lenses under 35mm.... You will get blotchy polarising, same as what you get when using a straight polariser...

ohhh and dont max them out.. you will star loosing magenta, shots start going infra red. I go to about 7 stops MAX.. after that you will get colour shifts.

Other than that, I use them almost daily now... Converted all my Canon glass to 80mm fronts... the same as my ZIESS glass... I have a slip on ring that holds the VND.. Clips off and on milli seconds.. none of that screwing on and off drama.

But when my big production EPIC kits come out, I stick with my Arri Mb21's

Mark, what do you mean Slip Ring? Very interested in this setup...

It's a series 9 filter holder... you can put series 9 ND's inside or screw on the out of it... or do as I do and hot glue a VND into it.
80mm in size... Duclos sell the 80mm conversion kits for the Canon glass... ZIESS Super speeds are 80mm as well..... and off you go into happier life of less dickin around with filters.
Multiple step up rings... get the lens caps while your at it.

Here is a link to the clip on ring.
