  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ND filter what is your solution ???

Hi,

For Epic-w, what have you chosen as ND Filter, I really hesitate between:

- A Wooden Camera Zip Box with ND Filter 4x5.6 ? but what brand, True ND ? NISI ? What is the perfect set ?

- A PL motion Mount ? Not a perfect solution if ND>4 and for the moment I have Nikon/Sigma/Tamron Lenses with Nikon Mount. So for me a really expensive solution ! But I'm interrested in the Optimo EZ1 and in buying a set of Cine prime.

- Circular ND Filter ? Not very neutral apparently... and I have differents diameters for my lenses.

- Something else ?

I'm curious of what Epic-W users have chosen and your feedback of your own solution.

For the moment, I just use my Epic indoors and use a PROND32 from HOYA on some lenses (Nikon 70-200/Tokina 11-16) for outdoors.

My epic will be used on documentaries, fiction and commercials. So I'm really looking for a light solution.

I would highly recommend investing in a 4x5.65" set once you get up and going.

Zip Box is neat, I'd aim at the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom for lighter weight and rigidity.

At the moment I'd lean towards (in no real order):
- Tokina Pro IRND
- Formatt-Hitech Firecrest ND
- Mitomo True ND
- Panavision PanaND
- Lee ProGlass Cine IRND
- Nisi

Personally I'd go with one of the bonded solutions above if you want your filters to last a while.

I know I have to use quality filters because I have two Tiffen Pro ND 4x4s and there was a chemical reaction after a while and they are now unusable ... as if they had become creamy.

Do you think to make a comparative test beetwen these filters with the Helium sensor? It would be great !!!

Is there a problem to use IR filters with the Helium ?

I read that you didn't like to use many ND filters together, so what kind of kit do you recommand to have in priority, 4 to 6 or 7 to 10 stops?

Don't know about those Tiffen's. I have work booked for a little while and a full spread ND test is a bit away. I have been using the Firecrests for a long while and more recently the Tokinas. I should have sets of the Lee and PVs coming my way shortly, so if I get a spare day and I'm in town I'll knock something out.

You don't want the bastard "color tinted" IR filters that we used so long ago IMO. You want these modern filters for the highest quality results. Oddly you can get away with regular NDs even, but you will notice more color shift overall due to the lack of precision their manufacturing process and general level of technology.

I do not stack ND filters. Just not my thing. I'd recommend 1 of 3 ways to start:

- 3 set - ND .6, .9, and 1.2
- 6 set - ND .3, .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8
- pokemon set, catch them all, you'll use them all eventually :) My big sets go to 2.7 or 3.0.
 
Because some of my lenses are really wide, I am thinking of purchasing 6x6 instead 4x5.6 now.

It's heavy as F&*(^,

If I use 120mm X 120mm(6X6) I can even use 12mm/ 14mm wide angle lens in vista sensor!

Also my new sigma 20mm 1.4 needed 6x6 as well...

Very struggling.

But like Phil said, I strongly recommend you to consider Brighttangerine, their mattabox is really light, and sturdy. I love them. I like that one more than any of matte box out there.
 
After extensive use I can highly recommend NiSi filters!

I also never stack ND's, at exception of GND's which I do stack on opposite ends with different strengths to control Water & Sky or snow & Sky when both need it in very different way, but I recently have stacked ND's with NiSi with great results as their filters are built differently and are much easier to stack where reflection is well controlled.

As for Polarizer unfortunately this is really one of those Must Have filters, and while none are perfect they still all do the job, currently testing the new Tiffen insert on a Bright Tangerine Misfit MB.
 
If I buy a Bright tangerine Atom, I would like to be able to use it on photo lenses at first.

I thought I saw that the minimum diameter is 80mm, how to use it on a Sigma 18-35mm for example ? Or on a Tamron 24-70mm?

NISI filters are interresting but will they last for a long time?

I would like to buy 3 or 4 to start ... where I live the sun beats hard and I often close the diaph enormously while I already use the 1/64 on other cameras. So I think the first filters will not be enough.

What do you think if I go on 3 filters, what values do you advise me?
- 0.3
- 0.9
- 1.8

Is it the NISI "Nano IRND" that you use?

The 'basic set' is always dependant on where you're based/where you film. Dave in Dubai will have different needs from Sam in Scotland.

I'm in the UK so usually dealing with a mix of grey and relatively but not excessively sunny. 3, 4 and 5-stop tend to cover most situations for me. If I was in LA or Oz that might well be 3, 5 and 7 stop. Although I'd probably want more in-between filters too.

Hello guys,

I have Bright Tangerine VIV on the way and want to know what is the difference between 4x5.65" polarizer and circular?
I'm asking because VIV have rotateable filter stage :)
 
I have a Mysfit Atom, which I'm saving for when I get Cine lenses again... in the mean time since I'm using Sigma Art photography lenses (for portability + price reasons, since they're stunning lenses), I'm using a Wine Country Camera filter holder system. Wine Country offers an optional polarizer which I'm quite pleased with so far, and I'm using Formatt Firecrest NDs in it. It's been a sweet setup for filming in the wilderness clear days with blazing sun overhead.

And it's nice and compact, plus it looks elegant with the rosewood handles and all...

You can rent them. Or you can buy the Lee filters. Lee is owned by Panavision and the filters are "the same". Though slightly different in markings and all that.

I also have the viv and with the rotateable filter stages you have options. you can get the 4x5.65 linear or circular filter or the 138mm mounted and put it in the retaining ring as long as you're not using the clamp on donuts. I went with a 138mm mounted tru-pol (because you can rotate to any angle without vignetting) and mount in in the retaining ring in the back of the black hole adaptor (or the 143-114mm threaded adaptor with retaining ring).

I had to call my bright tangerine rep but theres a ring in the back that unscrews, you place the 138mm filter in, then screw it back in to mount it.
