NATURAL HISTORY CINEMATOGRAPHY

Hey Kennan. I saw that bobcat segment when the 4th episode of North America aired On Discovery earlier this month. Very cool stuff my friend! Congrats on digging up some new, never filmed behavior - and the extreme patience to capture the sequence ;))

Miss you and Karen too!! You two come on back up and visit us here in southern Utah! Lots of great natural world things to film in this area, as you know ;))

Some VERY NICE work being shown on this forum!!!!

Karen and I are a little shy to share this small three minute airing of a Bobcat on Discovery, as we know many of you have entire series, feature films, and huge projects going. This series features a lot of great Natural History filmmakers and tremendous talent in this seven part series.

The only reason we feel compelled to share, is after so many years, it is hard to find anything never before seen or filmed, let alone on a Red camera at 4K, 120 Frames per second!

The fourth episode in the North America series featured our footage of Bobcats hunting Gulls. Karen and I filmed in the WILD! It took us over a year to discover and ultimately film. Never been seen or filmed before, this time it is true. Other episodes in the North America series also features many other talented filmmakers! We also provided, grizzly bear footage and aerials.

Best, Kennan & Karen Ward

Excellent Kennan!! I know how hard is to get new behavior on "film". That is exactly what makes the difference between a dedicated wildlife filmmaker and a pass-by one. Keep it coming!!!!

Steve G. is great to see you on the forum, don't get lost.. Show us what have you been up too....Please!!

Thanks! I haven't been lost...on the contrary I've been fortunate to have a lot of work - and unfortunately that keeps me from visiting Red User as often as I'd like.

We're in editing right now on a documentary about Belize I've been working on since December. Its not strictly a natural world program, but has elements of adventure travel, action sports, scenics, history, wildlife, and cultures. I did shoot some good sequences of Maya sites, aerials, reefs, crocodiles, various birds, black howler monkeys, agouti, coati, kinkaju, sharks, rays, turtles, etc. Some mood montages (over-cranked) were shot in 4kHD with Epic, but because of the extreme mobility required and the intended 1080 HDTV delivery, I opted to shoot the bulk of the footage with a Canon XF 300 and a Canon XF 100 (both shooting 1080p MXF, 50 mb/s, 4:2:2), and several GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition (shooting 1080p) using tons of gadgets, mounts, and accessories.

At some point in the future I'll post up some natural history frames from Belize, and I'll also post up some from my huge Red camera footage library I've shot since August 2007. All of my Red footage library is 2D footage, not 3D. A huge portion of my Red footage library is natural history subjects - and nobody but me has ever seen those images! With 4K now finally exploding into marketability for cinema, commercials, and UHD TV, I'm now starting to monetize and leverage out my Red footage library (via all rights sale and licensing). There are some low resolution samples of my Red camera natural history footage in the tiny portion of my Red footage library that is represented by Artbeats:

BTW - for those looking for Red footage representation, I recommend Artbeats. They've done and excellent job representing that portion of my Red footage library.

Anyone on here who has leads or contacts for networks, producers, or studios seeking 5k and 4k (some over-cranked 3k too) contact me via email. We'll partner up on that - with you receiving a handsome referral fee for any closed deals. My email: steve at gg3d dot com

Hey Kennan - thanks!

the shots were done using: Nikon 60mm/Micro, 105mm Macro, 180mm, 300mm (the 105, 180 and 400 are all 40 year old glass) and the last couple of hummers (green background) were shot on the Sigma 150-500mm at 500.

On RCX - stop be anytime :-)

Great shots Max! And if I may I would just like to put in a word for Max, regarding his work and ethics. For the past year Max has worked on a pilot project of mine. It is a children's STEM educational program where children research a science topic and then produce a short form documentary on the subject. Max donated his time and his team cost and equipment rental to the project. He found a a small group of local school children who worked together to write and direct a short 5 minute film that answers the question. "Where does your water come from?" Max also was kind enough to donate some of his file footage for b-roll in the film.

As the EP on the project, I can not say enough good things about working with Max. We have never met in person and our working relationship is based on online chats and emails. He has come through in every aspect and far exceeded my expectations on this project. The children and teachers in the other participating schools just loved their little doc and now know where and how people in Tasmania get their water. And thanks to Max, they also got see what a beautiful part of the world Tasmania is. Can't thank Max and his production team enough for helping me get this film made and shared, Cheers Mates!
