MEDIA ADVISORY : M10-167

NASA Sets News Conference on Astrobiology Discovery; Science Journal Has Embargoed Details Until 2 p.m. EST On Dec. 2

WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe.

The news conference will be held at the NASA Headquarters auditorium at 300 E St. SW, in Washington. It will be broadcast live on NASA Television and streamed on the agency's website at http://www.nasa.gov.

maybe they will have a "special guest"...it is an interesting time to be alive!

is this somehow connected to wikileaks? i'm afraid we're going to see some AstroGate papers soon ...

Not to downplay this, but I am much more excited about the report on ABC news yesterday about the reversal of aging of lab rats through the process of re-invigorating their telomeres. The control rat's brain remained shrunken at 75% while the treated rat's brain returned to a full 100%. Terrestrial life is slowly getting to a point where we can continue to exist even after earth is no longer habitable.

There´s a EPIC camera somewhere in space!!!!

Hmmm. Wonder if they found that someone has been messing with one of the Mars rovers. Pimp my ride!

I don't think this will be some HUGE thing. They'll probably say "Hey guys, we MIGHT have probably cause to believe that there could MAYBE be little germs on Titan that POSSIBLY create carbon dioxide by feeding on methane WE THINK, and we're going to send a satellite there to take more pictures."

'The Face on Mars is real, it's actually Jimbo's face from the mail room. We sculpted it when we first landed on Mars 30 years ago'.

...But the face on mars picture is over 30 years old. :P

I'm betting the announcement has something to do with the Cassini-Huygens mission and the flybys and other events over the past few days. There's already significant new discoveries that are known, so there could be something truly significant if NASA is trying to make a formal announcement of it. Encladeus flyby is happening right now and only the other day, a whispy atmosphere containing significant amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide was discovered around the moon, Rhea.

Saturn and its moons are almost their own isolated eco-system within our solar system.

Seems like evidence of cellular life elsewhere in the universe has to be a given, it's just a matter of detecting it. I'd be a lot more excited to hear about another civilization. Hopefully one that can teach us how not to wipe ourselves out- because we're doing pretty well at that so far...

Awesome thread! Looking forward to meeting my long lost ancestors.

If you eat seafood, you probably already have, in a familial sort of way.

Even this would be a monumental announcement!!

Apart from the finding leaning toward the possibility of ET life i.e gases, mineral compounds or something remotely linked to carbon life .... It seems to me that if the finding revealed something more tangible, no matter at what level, and whether macro or micro, then the case for ET life would move from the current position to "not only is it likely, it is likely to be so prevalent that we earthlings might just be country bumpkins stuck out in the sticks of a spiral arm of our own (well inhabited) galaxy". If ET life was rare, or even uncommon, what would the chances be of us finding a sample of it in the great infinite, and so close to home? Pretty astronomical I'd think. ??????
