In this post (below), Ketch was most likely semi-joking.

However ... if it is feasible ... I believe that being able to christen (printed by Red) your Epic / Scarlet would be a great idea for a couple reasons.

Since the beginning of Red's camera program, owners have being unofficially naming their Red One cameras. This was reflective of the strong connection that owner / operators felt towards their new photographic tool. There is little doubt that this strong affinity between camera and owner will continue as Red transitions into the Epic Scarlet line. :001_wub:

I am quite sure that many customers would pay the extra cash for Red to properly and permanently print the name of their camera on the rear end of the brain.

Several future Epic owners (Ketch, myself, etc.) and future Scarlet owners (Joseph Hutson) have already expressed a potential interest in doing this. Most likely, because we plan on owning this camera for a long time to come.

I might even go so far as to suggest that each name should only be used once, and listed in a formal database. If each Epic / Scarlet camera had its own individual and visible name, it would be significantly harder for stolen cameras to be utilized undetected. :violent5:

If you think about it, boats and cars have benefited from this type of vanity label (identification) for decades.

I would love to hear if others agree ... or disagree.

Extra work = extra delays?

Is this feature going to slow down production of units? If so would you rather make everyone wait for this, or have your camera quicker to shoot with?

I have reserved my EPIC - with the R1's we waited until delivery to name them. I'd like our EPIC to be known as HAWAII.

I would pay extra for our brain to be tattooed with said name...

Speaking of security, how about a system whereby if someone tries to update the firmware in a camera with a serial number marked as stolen that camera is bricked until it can be returned to RED? Perhaps at the same time it could also broadcast its GPS location if it's connected to Wi Fi or Ethernet to RED as well?

This would have to be done just right, and the potential legal repercussions might present more risk than RED as a business entity would care to take on. Perhaps a serious penalty for false reports...

And herein, I believe, lies the weakness in your proposal. Who gets to decide what you can and can't name your camera? When do you have to decide? What if you "break the rules" and have a "pirate" organization inscribe yours? IMO seems like an incredible hassle in the making. Just send me my Scarlet, thank you.

The owner decides. However, there would most likely need to be a character limit.

If the name is taken ... like a password ... you would pick again.

You choose at the same time as any other option ... like the optional titanium mount.

Here is the great part ... You can also choose not to do it.

That way, Terry ... you just get your Scarlet. Or your name could be "Just My Scarlet"

NO Peter, I was not joking, I was dead serious, he he, I will get this camera Stamped with the chosen name, if Red can do this for a fee, that would be lovely, other wise I will have one of my friends do it for me, but having it done by Red, is my absolutely first choice, so I hope that we do get this possibility.

think this was asked back if it could be done on the RED One's by third party but considering that this is likely my final destination I would love for RED to stamp my cam for me! I have to say, the one's stamped by RED so far look wicked as hell with the name on the side

this is definitely a good idea, I can only imagine how aweful it must feel to get one stolen, this would be an amazing feature.

Security and Authenticity

Security and Authenticity

This would be an amazing feature. With how many Red have been stolen, it would be great to have it labelled in an open place oppose to where the SN is on the R1's now. And have a database of names and if any are (i hate to say it) stolen in the future.

Also a more personal feeling to the camera and the company.

I VOTE YES!

And I would wait

I also agree. I'd pay a fee, if needed, in order to get my Scarlet personalized.

Here was a thread I created on such a topic as this.

Love the idea

How about a firmware update so the camera addresses you personally when it boots up. "Good morning (or evening - the camera will know) Dave, what would you like to shoot today?" or

"Dave, I sense some blown out highlights, how about an ND 6 ?"

or ultimately,

"I'm sorry Dave, that shot is so bad I'm taking over now."

even better - on power off,

"Thanks, Dave, you're the best cinematographer I ever worked with." as you place the camera on the pillow beside you.

Now this is an idea I can get behind!

Count me in... I want mine to be called "Scam"

I think though that the early models can be easily named as they are built one at a time... naming the production models would probably slow things down alot.

Mine would probably say, "Dave, I see you're still horrible at this but I'm glad your having fun!" ;)

Still, I want to call mine "O'Hara".
