  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Very imporant for european users - do we need to pay VAT and taxes over these 9500 $? I see we need to send the camera to RED UK and then it is send to LA, but what about the money?
 
You have to ask Alex or Bomb squad from Red Europe, they will provide us with the details ... I think after the NAB.

If you can prove you've already paid VAT for your Scarlets serialnumber, I can't see how the customs should know what's inside the brain.
 
I have no clue, but I am right now guessing that 6K might be omitted and reserved for EPIC. Clue: Jarred stated the 5K fps and nothing about 6K. Remember it's 19.5 vs 14MP (approx.) that's a huge difference. And honestly, I'm more than happy shooting 5K at HFR plus new DR and color science. Something's gotta give in comparison to EPIC.

That said, I'd take 6K @ 25fps anytime!
 
This is so great, thank you Team RED!

My only problem now is indecision, there's a lot to chew over. A hgue part of me wants to go Epic X right away and be able to shoot un-cropped 5K.

VATs not a really customs charge, so that may well not be the issue. Having it appear on your company accounts may be trickier to explain.

.71 * 50fps = 35 fps


I asked about 6k for Scarlet and was told that they didn't announce it because they don't know yet what's possible with the firmware/chips.

You will have to pay VAT on the Upgrade.

I would rather use the difference between 5K and 6K speeds from Epic-D's specs for the calculation. Epic-D does 120fps at 5K and 100fps at 6K 2.4:1, or a difference of 1.2x. So I would expect the Scarlet-D hardware to be able to do 60/1.2=50fps at 6K 2.4:1.

Of course, it might be that the framerate performance of the Scarlet-D will scale differently with resolutions than the Epic-D. 24fps and anything over I'll be extremely happy with.

Very true. We will just have to wait. Remember the calculations for Scarlet-X frame rates don't quite add up either so we can only speculate. And I am still hoping for 24 or 25 or maybe even 30 fps @ 6K

I am facing a similar situation. My company is interested in upgrading our scarlet to the epic x before getting the epic dragon, but we have to wait until next year.

I'm hoping it's a deposit now and the balance when we send in the camera, but based on the upgrades for Epic-M/X I think it's all due at once...

I think 6k is at least important for photographers, even if they can not do it for video. But the camera needs to be available in a module/handle kit for instant use.

I actually steered clear of a scarlet to replace a friends Canon, as it is difficult and too costly to start, and a complex work flow for her. Anything over $10k is a lot, but a ready to run scarlet with module, handle and Red lens, and software package, for the stills market, could sell like mad at $5k. In wonder when Red will go for that market?
