  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Just seen it, quickest redteam button skip through I can remember. ;)

Why couldn't they do p24/30 6k just to have a non crop mode for people p50 would have been great but It think the Code engine is maxed out.

Is it just a bit larger than m43rds now?

I suppose November is the date for Scarlet 2 now? Or pre rumor. Hope 2 is closer rather than further. They need it and an all in one to squash competition.

scarlet 2???

Sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm not the best at figuring out crop factors. So what I'm trying to figure out is, will my 35mm have the same field of view at 5k dragon as it does now at 4k with Scarlet or will it be larger or smaller or about the same? Also I thought I remember reading awhile back that the sensor is much cleaner so you could lower your compression rate and still have great results. So then would it be feasible to shoot 5k at let's say 12-1 and still get an image similar to 8-1 at 4k mx so I basically can still get the same recording times out of a redmag even though it's 5k? Basically I'd need to figure out if I had to get more mags for the longer interviews that I often do or if I could still get around 30 min on a 64gb. Oh and this is awesome btw. Last night I was trying to convince my wife to let me plop down close to 20k before I knew about the Scarlet Dragon option. I was gearing up for the epic dragon straight upgrade. I can sell her on 9500. 20 was going to take a hell of a lot of work. Especially since I was sodomized by my taxes this year. I guess I made too much now that I'm shooting RED. Thanks.

Interesting options, I will have to weigh these up over the next couple of days - it's not an easy decision.

Would I be right in thinking that the Scarlet -> Epic X upgrade will essentially be taking most of the guts from the existing scarlet and putting them in a new black case along with a few parts that have been taken out of an Epic that has just been upgraded to a Dragon?

If so, it would be interesting to know what the warranty aspects of this might be, since it's anyone's guess what those parts might have gone through in the field.

I guess also if that's the case then we wouldn't be talking about a super-fast trade in, where the Scarlet is sent in and a fresh Epic is sent back, meaning it will all be dependent on the Dragon upgrade process, and just as likely to be snarled up in delays?

Unless things have changed, that is wrong. RED has said the sensor is 30mm wide or 6000pix wide with 5um pixels meaning math is quite easy, just take the number of pixels and drop two zeroes and divide by two to get its width in mm. So 5k is just over 25mm wide, 5kHD is 24mm wide, 4k is 20mm, 3k 15mm, 2k 10mm etc...

The Scarlet -> Epic -> Epic Dragon option is golden if we have to wait 6 months but can accept our Epic-X *now*. Any chance that that's the case? That's what I would do, get an Epic-X now. Raise rental rates and make up the difference in time for Dragon to ship.

Alexa, Sony f65, Red Epic-x, none of them had global shutter

Welllll Alexa and F65 both have physical shutter options, Epic-X has been troublesome and the F55 does have global shutter so presumably the next F cineAlta will too.

physical shutter is not electronic global shutter and I said f65 specifically as I was talking about high end cinema flagship cameras

@ Liam ....................surprised you have any money left after Nepal ! ; )

My reading of the Dragon Sensor Upgrade thread from yesterday was that the Scarlet upgrade path was going to be to Epic Dragon, ie that here wouldn't be a Scarlet Dragon. Extremely happy I misread that.

Good move, guys.

Gonna be tough for idiot producers to know what flavor of Ice Cream they can afford,

Get me a scoop of the Red One M, Red One MX, Epic M, Epic X, Scarlet X, Epic M Dragon, Epic X Dragon, Scarlet Dragon, Scarlet Epic Dragon Scarlet, Epic Scarlet Dragon M, M M M S, Money Money Sunday Dinner

Red you guys should setup a program where you confiscate older models and shoot them out into space that way those dumb idiot producers will have 2 options.. EPIC DRAGON.. SCARLET DRAGON ..

What's a Red One M chip going to rent for now? Will you have to pay a production to rent your Red One? Negative rentals?

@Jarred WOW!

You made my day! I never expected the option to upgrade to a Scarlet Dragon, AMAZING! Never Giving Up Hope... - 5k Ana on Scarlet Dragon :) finally, love-it. Excited to the Full specs...

Exactly those steps motivate extremely and makes to do my job even more passionately and opens new ways of creativity and possibilities.

Thank You RED & Jarred.

A company with integrity and a great product....how refreshing. Scarlet has been great for our company and a Scarlet Dragon will be even better....and I get to keep old #406. For this I am very grateful as we have been through a lot together :)

Is this upgrade path(s) a limited-time offer?

I think it's something my company will want to do next year rather than this year..
