  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

I really hope the Scarlet upgrade (#2) has 6k 24fps.

However, using the specs relationship between Epic-X and Scarlet-X, I'd predict that RED reserves 6k for Epic Dragon. Prove me wrong RED!

hard decision:frown2::sad:

if you do the upgrade to scarlet dragon does that mean you won't be able to upgrade to epic dragon at a later date?

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but the upgrade path should be more beneficial than buying a new camera.

In this case we have a Scarlet body ($10,000) plus an upgrade to Epic-X ($9,500) plus an upgrade to Dragon ($9,500). All combined is roughly $29,000

New Epic-X Dragon will cost $24,000 (as Jarred mentioned in the Dragon thread)

So it appears that the final "upgraded" camera will cost you more than just selling your Scarlet, adding to that and buying an Epic Dragon.

thats what im saying in my last posts..somebody probably did wrong math

I can't believe how tempting both of those are. Option 2 gets you epic performance but you would die a little inside every time you used it knowing what the epic dragon is capable of. Option one gets you epic but you would die a little inside every time you used it knowing what the epic dragon is capable of. Quite the conundrum indeed. Especially when the prices are only 9500 or 19,000 if you wanna go all in. That is quite the discount when the new camera is going for 29K.

1) Scarlet to Epic-X for $9500 is more than fair
2) Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon for $9500 seems very interesting but hard to say without more specs, certainly sounds fair to me
3) Epic-X to Dragon-X for $9500 seems weird since the Epic-X is $17500 and with the upgrade you're paying $27000 for a Dragon-X that is going to be $24000 new?

It seems like the problem is with the 3rd upgrade path.

The brain only is $ 7950 USD. Selling it used (which also implies only 90 days warranty for the buyer and extra transfer cost) - You will be lucky to get $ 5000...

Your best bet is to go Epic-MX now. Use it and let it make the extra cash needed for the Dragon update later. You could not make such a money (or that fast) with Scarlet...

where are you getting 10,000$ for scarlet body? Scarlet brain currently costs 7900$ brand new or so. That means used for brain alone technically you can only get ~$5000 by selling it used. So 9,500 + 9,500 + ~5,000 = 24,000$

edit: and yes like someone else said, selling it used you pay something like 1000-1500$ (if I'm not mistaken?) in transfer fees and inspections and other hassles so you lose out even more money. So it's far less of a hassle to just do the upgrade on your previously owned scarlet

Many here seems to take for granted RED's frequent and more-then-generous offers that value the used equipment at full cost. Good luck selling used Epic-X at $ 17500...

No offense...

Hey Demetri, I don't know when you bought your Scarlet, but are you sure you aren't including the side SSD module and mount in that $10K? I'm a Nov 3rd buyer, and I got my Scarlet for $9,750, which included the side SSD module and the AL mount. Minus the costs of those two accessories (I think side SSD was something like $1500, and the AL mount was around $500), my brain cost was about $7,750. I don't know how the price has fluctuated since, so you may have paid something different.

Right now, I'm just amazed at the fact that I can trade in my camera (which I've used for a year) for an Epic. And later, when I'm ready, upgrade that camera to an Epic Dragon. I'm pretty happy about this deal.

Transfer fees are now only $500 + $100 inspection (optional).

And for those of us that bought the BT Scarlet at $7,100, it's an even better deal.
