  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Dragon Sensor Upgrade Program begins

+1 for sharp stills

no compromise.. its just kinda redundant with the Dragon if you used it for highlight protection. But if you guys want it for the sharp stills etc we can leave it in.

I know this probably won't happen, but you know what would do it for me? If there was a 1000fps burst mode for 15 seconds at 4K!

I am sure there are all kinds of sensor limitation issues but that would be rockin...

Does the Dragon still require the use of IR filters?
And has the flare issue that was present with the original epics been totally re designed for Dragon? (Your flare guard solution was a partial fix for this but did help)

I have ordered my Epic M upgrade but how long will till my Stage 3.5 Epic X have to wait?

From Phil Holland's Red Dragon Info and Data Sheet:
"What about IR and the OLPF? There's a new IR OLPF designed specifically for Dragon. (source
1, 2, 3)"

I'm hoping there's a lot of improvement with the new OLPF.

It is a shame that more companies do not put the customer first. I cannot tell you how many times we make decisions at RED because someone repeats what Jim and Jarred say all the time - "Put yourself in the customer's shoes." We know we cannot please everyone all the time, but it does not stop us from trying to do so.

The RED RMA team just did that for me. Big thanks to Jay and Christine!

Anyone know if the new DSMC Fan 2.0 Upgrade Kit is included in the Dragon upgrade?

Yes I know and no, it's not. :)

It's in the thread somewhere. It's an optional thing and not something they consider a needed upgrade

Dear RED,

Please take your time getting the color and highlight roll off right on the Dragon. Clearly, you guys were rushed to get something together for NAB and with lack of Dragon footage to show, you opted to show us sensors being installed. Now that the time pressure of NAB is off, please don't release anything that is not 100% finished and awesome. Every day I shoot with my Epic I am pleased with the images. The only thing I want more out of this camera at the moment is range in the highlights and better color. I don't really need anything else. I can wait a long time if what you release is going to be amazing and totally 100% solid and ready. Thanks!

+1000 on that

We won't release Dragon until it is bulletproof and all features enabled. We have learned our lesson. But then again... everything changes. Count on it. :-)

Thursday:

-EPIC-X non-early adopters can pre-order upgrade for $9500.

And you can add a Rocket-X to your order for $4495.

Double checking here. Is the Rocket - X discount offer when ordered with the upgrade open ended for early adopters?

If things change and you decide to release a few before having everything absolutely nailed down, I'm game.

I guesstimate that RED will figure out a way to make the sensor's dynamic range improve by more stops than they are getting now, won't release the sensor until late summer, and keep everyone on their toes.

I'm looking forward to getting Dragon, no matter how long it takes...although we all want it sooner than later.

Jim I thought it had been released? What about all those cameras upgraded at NAB, are they out in the field or sat in Red HQ?

I think it is READY NOW...thats what they wanted to show when they got that LAB at NAB 2013.....Right Jim..

This is what I don't totally understand. So they are upgrading cameras with sensors so clearly the hardware is ready, but if the software is not ready will the upgraded cameras just be held and not shipped back to users until the firmware is finished? I guess that's why the users with cameras upgraded at NAB were pre-selected as people who were ok with having their cameras held for a while longer until software is ready? If software isn't ready, is Dragon really ready? Unless Jim just means that that beta software is ready and that is what all the upgraded cameras get now, whereas people may not be able to buy new Epic Dragon's until the release firmware is ready? That could be very nice for Epic Dragon upgraders if they have the monopoly on Dragon for a while as sort of beta-testers... as long as they dont mind being in beta?

It is a bit of a confusing message for RED to show with their labs at NAB that Dragon is ready and upgrades are started but then state it will not be released until it is ready, implying that it is not yet ready. So what did the people with cameras upgraded at NAB get?

+ a MILLION for the suggestion ! Even 700fps would be great for a 4K burst. 10 secs, even 5?

I believe all the cameras at NAB were factory owned and the clean room was an effective trade show traffic draw. As always, RED has great stagecraft at NAB. There was lots of buzz around the booth and photo uploads on social media. RED seems to be doing the right thing by not having the customer be the beta testers for Dragon so when they finally do the upgrade we can expect a very stable, production ready product. Looks like we're still some time away from this upgrade so relax and be happy with what you have for now.
