  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Dragon Sensor Upgrade Program begins

can anyone tell me what the cost is for this upgrade in the uk placed order for dragon upgrade but my red account is saying £9500 pounds total is this correct as i thought it was $9500 us

I'm still trying to figure out how Sony got 8k worth of them on the f65 and still supposedly is hitting 14 stops. Must be some innovation in signal processing on the digital end of things
Seeing how the F65 only has enough pixels to be about 5.8k before debayer, it's not that hard to figure out.

Jarred, what's the expected timeframe of Epic-X Dragon appearing in the store as a separate item to purchase immediately?

Will we have to wait till all the initial early adopters and Epic-M owners upgrades are finished?

REDs online store is a bit odd like that, showed my scarlet order as a simple currency symbol swap for a while, not sure if it was ever right. I'd e-mail your rep.

Did anyone notice the lack of any update on REDRAY and the projectors?!?
Anything at the booth?

P

They had a projector projecting 4k... and if it was the RED laser projector... it needs more time to bake.

If this was a Hollywood Caper movie, (that ends well) the heroic company, having some final glitches with their new sensor, and unable to actually launch at NAB, would launch anyway, in an amazing feat of pure daredevil chutzpah, taking reservations (no harm in that) and upgrading phantom customers' cameras on site.
I really hope that's happening, because that needs to be a chapter in the history of this maverick organisation, and if it isn't, it's disappointing and a missed opportunity for some wonderful stories in future years.

With respect to colour matching, yes, the Dragon matches with previous RED cameras, but with the warning that where the Dragon portrays colour more accurately, there will be differences. The difference with the Dragon chip is that obviously it's a different chip and we've made numerous changes to improve colorimetry (based on what we've been learning these last few years), and the software color science side necessarily reflects those physical changes. It's not a completely different look on the Dragon, but it's obviously not identical either, or else where would the improvements be?

This is music to my ears :) Thanks for chiming in Graham. When should we expect RedColor4 and RedGamma4 for dragon?

what about IR? that gonnna change too? mx only formatt IR worked like charm hope this changes wth dragon

As I understand we are loosing the HDRx then?
I can understand it's trickiness but I really loved that feature. Useful for so many things. Can have a shorter shutter time for stills for example or doing extreme movements from inside to outside.
Also great for timelapses which I really enjoy doing on the Epic. Just enable hdrx and start and you got a nifty movie in mega quality.

Oh well if it's true it still sounds like a indredibilisious camera. Just pains a bit to upgrade and loose something you love. Fantastic job on everything else though of course!
Cheers

IR has changed too. The changes are physical so although there could very well be new colour spaces and gamma options to reflect the increased dynamic range and colorimetry of the Dragon, they'll be coming along too.

Graeme, is the new color science somewhat trickling down to the MX sensor?

With Dragon, most of the color science changes are physical with the chip, so you can't trickle them down, just upgrade them up.
