  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Dragon Sensor Upgrade Program begins

For non-early adopter Epic-X owners, how long is this preorder price with the Rocket-X discount going to be good for? Or is that the permanent price for those who are upgrading?

For Dragon sensor warranty, does our existing Armor warranty still apply or will we need new or additional Armor?

Awesome news!!!!
FADE IN:
Act 1: I was ridiculed for being the first director of an Indian feature film ("e-Preeti" in the Kannada language) to embrace Red One back in 2008. The PR manager warned me that printing the RED logo on the invites to the shoot kickoff party was professional suicide. ("DIGITAL is just another word for AMATEUR") They said I was just a young American girl who didn't understand how to play cricket with the big boys.
Act 2: When I bought my own Red One in 2009, they said "Don't nobody want that thing here in India."
Act 3: When I got up the courage to bring my Epic-M to Bengaluru (heart of the non-Hindi speaking, Southern film industry), they said it was a waste of luggage space. ("Nobody here has the time or patience to figure out this complicated digital stuff"). Astonishing, considering that India's first-rate IT industry needs no introduction. Ours were the only two Epics available in two states, and among the very few being used in India (when compared to film).
Epilogue: Now, this Washingtonian vows to have the first Indian Dragon! I don't care if I have to camp out in front of the Red store in Cali.
But by now, everyone is asking "When is the next date that your Epic is available?" and "Can we see your Epic? We are trying to buy one too." AND my personal favorite ..... "When are you getting the new Dragon? We want to shoot on it." And about that "complicated digital stuff"? Today, Bengaluru is known for its talented army of DITs who can troubleshoot any Red you throw at them.
Like so many Indian cinema blockbusters, a lot of struggle and suffering, LOTS of naysayers, but I finally got my improbable, but deliciously happy ending! In Hindu culture, RED is the color of celebration and happiness. Most Indian movies (even many action ones!) end in a Hindu wedding scene with a beaming bride wearing a RED sari. Just coincidence? I think not!!! Time to grab a cold mango juice and toast all of our Happy Endings as Red owners. No matter which model we have now, the Dragon's journey is evidence that we all backed a winner!

(P.S. I know it's not "The End", just being poetic)

We will begin upgrading Epic-X and Epic-M cameras tomorrow in our booth. Come view the actual process. Seriously.

Don't bring your camera, we have already pre-selected and obtained all the cameras that we have time to upgrade during the show and these will be shipped to their owners the week after NAB.

This is really cool. Stop hassling Jarred for footage and start hassling these guys. We all know who they are....

Congrats to Jarred and the team. I'm sure pulling these goodies together was an impossible task.

No news on the red laser Pj?

The Red Armor question is a very significant one! Still have 2 years of it, would like to know how this goes as well!

I think I remember Jared answering that awhile ago and saying it does transfer.

Just want to see about clarifying some things on the original post.

-EPIC-M owners can pre-order the upgrade for $9500

-Early adopters can pre-order the upgrade for $8500 ($1000 credit when invoiced)

The upgrade is $9500 for Epic-M owners.

The upgrade for those of us that are early adopters with the Epic-X's is $8500.

But my question is about the $1,000 credit? As written, it actually means that the early adopters get the upgrade plus a $1,000 credit. Somehow, I don't think that is at all correct. I believe the early adopter discount is the $1,000 credit, but want to make sure.

Also, if you were an early adopter, bought an Epic-M and then did the Epic-X upgrade program, do you get the upgrade for both cameras at $8500? This doesn't apply to me, but I thought I would go ahead and ask because I know some people that would apply to.

Thanks RED. Looking forward to the upgrade and looking forward to what looks like a well though out upgrade process that will quick and efficient.

So, what exactly is Dragon today ?
Is there something special to explain the 60% price hike to what was originally proposed ?
Will RPP lenses cover 6K ?
Can the upgrade be done in Europe ?

So many questions, but nice to see Red moving ahead with the program !

Damn it! I'm gonna get so broke.

Going back to work now to pay for all this...oh my so many new toys.

Any RED Ray love coming soon? I am so hoping to hear something good on this today...Jarred?..

With the 4k TV's dropping in price to $5k for a 55 inch Sony, it's going to be a special year. Now just need to be able to play the footage back with the REDRAY player I ordered.

Wish I were there, working instead to pay for all the new stuff.

Best to all,
Frazier

This isn't hassling. This is business Meryem.

What I'm saying is you are likely to get footage results faster by leaning on the usual suspects, especially given how much work RED just put on their post-NAB plate. Calm down, Rick. I'm in this business, too....and I launch another new feature project on 5/13. So a lot may be riding on this upgrade.

No news on the red laser Pj?

Hey they need *something* to talk about tomorrow :-)

Maybe, just maybe, tonight was teasers and well-known stuff; the real game-changers come tomorrow?

Mike

The Price hike reasoning was hinted at a while back, more of the cameras parts had to be replaced which lead to more costs, this is similar to the reasons that the Scarlet Dragon had to be dropped with an upgrade program introduced.

Another question for Jarred, if he is still awake.

Is there also newly tweaked color science baked into the upgrade? I'm in a bit of a fight over that right now on this upcoming project regarding the seemingly endless RED v. Alexa skin tones debate. I hope Graeme stuck a knife in this discussion.
