  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Dragon Sensor Upgrade Program begins

so whats the dynamic range in dragon? says 3 stop over MX but what you say for mysterium x DR? 13-14-15? or 18 with HDRx +3 Stop on Dragon?

We have kinda given up on stating dynamic range numbers because there are 20 different ways to measure it and they usually all give different results and every method has a somewhat subjective element to it.. so whatever you rated the MX sensor at.. add to that.

2 Important questions:

For those EPIC - M Owners that did not do the "EPIC-M Upgrade" yet ( antenna, boards, heatsink, etc...) will it be possible to do both that EPIC M Upgrade and the Dragon Upgrade with shipping it in only one time ? or do i have to ship it in 2 times ( sadly from germany it is a hell of a hassle to ship something in for upgradesss :( so it would be fantastic to be able to do it on one hit ) Since i have a planned an a bit flexible vacation in th USA next month anyway... Is there also possiblities that when i fly in with the Camera to California, drop it there and after a couple of weeks pick it back up ?

- Will the OLPF be also exchanged ? ( maybe because of different pixel size / density ? )

--> any new things to consider in this case with IR ND Filters ? ( will the so far learned Filter Strategies from M-X Sensor stay ? )

rock n roll!

When you are able to pre-order, RED.com will also have updated FAQs so check there as a first step. If you you don't get your answers there, your BOMB SQUAD rep will be happy to help with answers. Or if you are in Vegas, stop by our booth.

thanks brent for our answer and as usual working hard night shifts for the costumers!

Damn it, an I wanted to get some work done today. Now I'll have to refresh every minute until I have my spot...

Question: It was already stated no money was exchanged for your place in line for the upgrade. How does that work if you add a Rocket-X? Is a deposit required for that? Or do we have to pay in full for that?

Jarad, how long are you anticipating the turnaround to be on the upgrade of each camera? Exciting stuff, to be sure.......

1.5 shadows and 1.5 highlights protection?

Wow! Fantastic, also eager to hear the Scarlet upgrade price, is tomorrow considered Monday or Tuesday ;) will the fan upgrade be separate or included in this. And probably too early for this question but ill throw it out anyways - is there an estimated timetable for when you will get to the scarlet upgrades

so no short film this year, but will there be any sample footage at the booth?

btw, so appreciate the whole teams hard work and dedication to all of us, you guys rock. See you at the booth later today.

Although I can appreciate this position, it does seem like a bit of backpedaling from the "Enter the Dragon" post from a few months ago, which now seems a little over-the-top. I think RED still probably needs to work on tempering their enthusiasm. Sorry, guys.

Having said that, I think even among those folks who found the 13.5 stops of DR claim for MX a bit optimistic, no one would argue 12 stops from that sensor.

So, if you need a number to work from and the 3 stops more of DR are firm, usable, undisputed and worst case scenario, then you're talking at least 15 stops of DR from Dragon.

That's still 1 stop more than everyone else is claiming and at substantially higher resolution with less noise, which makes it seem less like an engineering marvel and more like magic.

Show me the footage and I'll show you the money

This upgrade is different from the M to the MX. When that went down, we all were given the chance to judge the quality with a demo at NAB. It's very disappointing that there are no examples at NAB but you guys are still taking pre-order spots. I understand why but hot damn guys, c'mon. It's the pictures we all want to see here. I knew this was around the corner but it's the PICTURES I wanted to see, not the words printed on the page! Give us something soon. I personally just need to see what the differences are because specs are just that, specs.

Nudge nudge, still waiting a formal confirmation of the sensor diagonal?

I'm shopping for some glass *right now*...

Mike

Is the fan update included in the dragon update? As the price went up quite alot from the previous stated $6000, it would be a nice gesture to include the new fans when updating ;)
