  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB Show Rumors

If Blackmagic is planning a S35 or 4K camera, they had better start filling existing orders FAST! I have a colleague that paid for his BMCC (in full) back in October via B&H and still hasn't heard a peep. With that kind of manufacturing (or lack thereof) I don't think we can take the Blackmagic Cinema Camera seriously... yet. I'd be surprised if they even start shipping the MFT mount camera before the end of the year.

Since I never signed a non-disclosure agreement, I guess I can let the cat out if the bag.

Awhileback, in an early version of iPhoto, apple computers developed an algorithm to "emulate" film makers styles... The first implementation of this code emulated Ken Burns.

This year... At NAB... Apple will announce the Stanley Kubrick effect in final cut x. By applying this effect to your timeline, your footage magically becomes a revolutionary cinematic masterpiece.

There was much internal debate at apple over releasing this, or the Ed wood effect.

Been an amusing one. They used an industrial sensor, but found a problem with the faceplate they had put on it, some were good and went out, others were not. Took ages to resolve, eventually they got somebody new to do the job, but don't know what happened after that. As I said before, they are better off sourcing a new sensor, releasing a new model at NAB, and starting again.

April 1st? You are right William, it is getting a bit boring around here. Here's a new joke, Guys, Stanley Kubrick wants his lens cap back, he reckons you're using it too much while filming.

I agree with your subtext William, a lot of his block busters where not that great, a little bit of this and a little bit of that seemed to make him great overshadowing his own true talents, but unlike Stanley baring my own chest and being disrespectful to authority never worked for me ;) ...Is that the time, 3:55am...

Not quite accurate, the original suppliers are in place pretty much they've just with BMs assistance put in place a QC testing regime suited to BMs requirements for the sensor rather than its original purpose.

Vincent seems to think there is a game changer product launching at NAB.

If it is something everyone can use, hopefully it's a content distribution service that really allows content makes to make decent money off their work.

Failing that, a raw workflow for the 5d MIII would be good start (with 4k). I like the idea of wireless 4k device with an external recorder. A full frame 35mm sensor that is gopro size and sends it to a 4k recorder.

I actually love alot of kubrick's work... i was just trying to think of something funny to type...

I have ALOT of nervous energy awaiting NAB this year.... we're waiting to pull the trigger on purchasing a red epic till we know what red is going to announce/release... and the wait is literally killing me.

As a Scarlet owner itching to upgrade to Epic, the biggest excitement for me will be awaiting the upgrade cost. I'm hopeful RED will offer something reasonable.

I'm in the exact same boat and hoping the same. The Scarlet line hasn't been very good to me (on my third camera now), maybe that will change with the Epic-Dragon. Tired of the nervousness that comes with using Scarlets.

That's what I'm most excited about as well right now.

I have a feeling we may see some new specialty cameras from RED...

I have this feeling that RED will drop the price once again on the Scarlet line. But to keep existing Scarlet owners happy, they'll apply the original purchase price to an upgrade path to Epic and/or Dragon. As for new specialty cameras, I think RED should focus on new tech for existing product base rather than create new cameras. Why? Because other companies are finally catching up to RED and by putting all their focus on new tech, they'd be better allocating their resources to stay ahead in the game.

What's next?

What's next?

Based on Jim's past choices in terms of living up to "Obsolescence Obsolete" and the current competitive environment I expect there will be very attractive upgrade paths offered to all RedUsers. The recent Early Adopters thread might indicate a particularly great deal for some, but at this stage of RED's growth I expect even recent converts to be well taken care of.

FWIW, I see the Alexa, the F55 and the C500 as each of those companies' "takes" on what RED so boldly pioneered - S35 CMOS sensor, RAW color and CF/SSD recording media. While there are meaningful differences between the platforms, its no longer the apples to oranges equation of RedOne vs 35mm film/Sony's SR based cameras (F900, F23, F35)/Panny P2/ARRI D20&21, etc of not that long ago.

I know its only human to gripe about what isn't ideal about the Epic/Scarlet ecosystem but I suspect Jim and the RedTeam are painfully aware of what could be better. I have huge respect for their willingness to take risks and live with the consequences, even if that means providing upgrade pathways at prices that leave them little margin.

IAC, the broader industry landscape, beyond the camera market, is in the early stages of a fundamental re-invention to keep up with technological and behavioral changes. Where/how people consume content, delivery modalities, etc. IMO, this presents a once in a generation opportunity for new players to blow by the existing oligopoly - or be purchased by them ;-). I mention this because I see RED positioning themselves to potentially leverage their technology portfolio into distribution. If that is the plan, then growing their installed base of RED cameras could provide important synergies and visibility. RED's decision to have a bigger NAB presence might be part of a profile building strategy intended to scaffold them into being perceived as a viable player in the distribution marketplace.

Should be an interesting NAB at the RED epicenter.

Has anybody been guessing "lenses" for Vincent's gamechanger blog entry? Though it would be hard to tell if lenses could still count as changing the game.... Depending on price maybe...

Perhaps Patrick, though I can't imagine new lens tech would be as universal as Vincent suggests.

Jacek's Optitron is arguably a (sorry Jeff, reach for the mouthwash) game changer in that it makes using lenses designed for still photography viable for a lot of motion work they would otherwise suck at.

I still keep wondering if there would be a way to use something similar to a laser pointer (in a safe wavelength outside the visible spectrum) to "paint" the focus target and have a "smart" focus motor lock onto it. I've even imagined a tiny transmitter behind the talent's ear that provided ranging data for a focus system. I'm not opposed to a touch screen based option where the puller picks the critical focus target, and I love the idea of how hard you push controlling the rack speed, but if both the operator and the subjects are moving rapidly I doubt it would work.

Bob, I am definitely getting this thing.

Ryan and Brett, its maybe a bit generalized for "every filmmaker" but it def levels the playing field for a lot of situations. :)

Hmmmmm... I'm seeing things that indicate things... now I'm hoping the Raptor purchase wasn't premature.

By the way, is it just me or has anyone else been frequently refreshing this thread and the comment stream on Vincent's blog? I need an intervention...
