  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB Rumors: Who has em?

I'm with Bruce. Unless you lose a lot of money on depreciation it's often as easy as upgrading. In fact a year ago RED was dismissive of the idea of upgrading just a sensor and stated repeatedly that selling your brain and buying a new one made more sense.

What is nice is accessory compatibility with RED. So if you switch from one brain to another ideally all your battery plates etc work.

Are there any concrete rumors on what's going on with Smoke?

There is a trade-in program. It's called selling your camera second-hand and putting the money towards a new one.

Always worked well for me - and you get a new warranty with the new cam. Plus someone else in the world gets to make movies with your old stuff, which is nice.

And wow - if this is true then why would it only be C300 owners who will be unhappy with their recent purchases?

Anyway, exciting stuff! Now bring on Sony F5, Alexa 4K and of course RED DRAGON!

I'm just being sarcastic, as always... wink, wink ;-)

... and as always Bruce- sound advice, nothing wrong with that approach either,
and I agree, bring on the Dragon, 617 and 645 !

There's a demo of Smoke at the NAB Supermeet. There's like 40 tickets left here if anyone's interested: http://supermeet.com/
Also a Smoke event on Sunday the 15th in Vegas: http://www.smokeischanging.com/

http://www.eoshd.com/content/7846/canon-set-to-announce-4k-120fps-raw-c500-and-a-cinema-1d-dslr-specs-and-price-revealed

Canon set to announce 4K 120fps RAW C500 and a Cinema 1D DSLR – specs and price revealed.

Canon are due to issue a press release ahead of NAB. What my source says about the new cameras is pretty extraordinary even in light of what Sony are doing with the FS700.

Canon will release a C500 for $25,000.

This is designed to be an Epic killer.

It is 4K at 120fps with EOS RAW via 3G HD-SDI. Officially certified raw recording deck solutions are being provided by Blackmagic and AJA.

At 60 fps EOS RAW from the C500 is 12 bit. This drops to a still impressive 10 bit at 120p.

The C500 also pumps out 1080p, 2K and Quad HD.

And now for the 4K DSLR…

Costing $10k. This is full frame and does ALL-I, IPB and MJPEG 4K.

Both the C500 and 4K EOS DSLR have log profiles.

Another feature is that it has a Super 35mm crop mode (like the D800 with DX crop mode) for compatibility with cinema lenses.

There’s also going to be 2 new zooms. Lightweight 2kg PL and EF mount cinema lenses. The first is a 15.5-47mm T2.2 and the second a 30-105mm T2.2. These are pricey cinema lenses at the $15,000 mark.

More news to follow.

Expect this to go official on Thursday afternoon GMT and in the morning in the US.

4K RAW external recorder, is this one of the MISSING LINK's for Arri, Sony and Canon upcoming 4K camcorders?
4K display output, 120fps and 3D, sounds pretty cool...

I prefer 4K RAW in-camera, but somebody thought of it before me, luckily...

From the release:

"...Gemini RAW is ideal for multi-camera shoots. Up to four streams can be recorded, provided the cameras are gen-locked. A built-in four channel (quad) splitter may be used to view all four images simultaneously, both on the internal LCD and via an external HD-SDI monitor.

And the Gemini RAW has a built-in four-channel switcher with touch screen selection. One HD-SDI output can be selected to show the Quad-Split channels for monitoring, while a second HD-SDI can be the selected live output. Depending on the source camera, Raw can be recorded up to 48 frames per second (fps), 60 fps, or 120 fps.

Another important feature is the ability to record full uncompressed, while simultaneously recording Avid DNxHD 36 for proxy purposes. This is ideal for off-line/on-line editing workflows. And the Gemini RAW, in some modes, has the ability to create two simultaneous masters on two separate SSD’s, providing a very high degree of safety for the footage.

Avid DNxHD 444 will also be supported. The Gemini RAW comes with a Transfer Station capable of using USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Firewire 800 or Thunderbolt.

While Raw Support is optional on the original Gemini 4:4:4, it is a standard feature on the new Gemini RAW. And, more importantly, all features and options, including full 3D, are standard, on the Gemini RAW.

Gemini RAW supports 4K Raw for recording, and playback. A special feature is included so that the real 4K images can be output to a 4K monitor using four HD-SDI outputs built into the Gemini RAW."

Take with Grain of salt, interesting rumor

Canon C500 4K raw recording for $25K at 120fps with external recorder and a FF 4K Cinema DSLR for $10K
, according to Eoshd today...

... Must make a few Canon C300 owners a little less happy with their recent 1080p aquisitions, if turns out to be true.
I wonder if Canon will offer a trade-in program for disgruntled recent purchasers...

;-)

Well, Empire Strikes Back...

external recorder HDSDI for 4K - how convenient!
Shouldn't be more than tiny 20 pounds or so.
Bet it'll be half price of the camera or pretty close to that.
4k mjpeg for DSLR!!! Great, why not to record 256 colours depth at 8K than? Or grayscale 36 mpix?
