NAB new announcements...

In fact, when you look at the prices, all the announcements, be they Red or Sony/Canon/etc... are disappointing... unless you live in the fourth dimension, ie you're a big pro doing shitty commercials/Hollywood porn/etc... I guess none of these camera makers will soon give what most indy filmmakers are waiting for, a $6000 DSLR 4K camera. It will happen, but when ? All these companies are just protecting their high-profile clients, Red included.

The saddest thing about all that, is just when you look at the footage these F65/Epic/Alexa owners are doing. Just a pain for the soul, as I like to say. I can't believe that some dads are filming their kids with an Epic and, furthermore, are so proud to showcase it on the Shot on Red section ;-)

Rant over ;-)

Red forced the hand of the industry years ago, and I can't wait until all of the dust settles. You guys started the revolution, and you are still steps ahead of it as everyone tries to play catch-up. Shooting Alexa is the equivalent of DJing with Serrato Scratch: easy as hell, and tricks a lot of people into thinking you have skill.

This is going to be an interesting NAB for sure. There is certainly a lot of buzz and there seem to be many cameras coming down the pipe.

I've been thinking that Dragon, beyond the potential sensor upgrade (maybe even Monstro), might have more to do with hardware upgrade that comes with it. Now that we've seen what's coming we should remember Red has always enjoyed being a good bit further ahead of the rest of the crowd.

At this point there might be some validity in making Scarlet a little more "Epic", and Epic a bit more "Zeus-like". I can see a pricing tier that works for this, but I can't predict the future. Although I was pretty spot on guessing about Scarlet.

I'm excited I get to see the future of digital cinema cameras at NAB in person and whatever else Red has got up their sleeves. Can't wait.

I agree with Kristin that many are getting camera crazy, but cameras are created as tools and the shooters can capture whatever they want. Who are we to judge? Although I don't come from the world of shooting babies, funny cats, or cinnamon challenges.

Well the press release from Canon is out. Truly seems to me like what Red did 6 years ago with the Red One as Jim mentioned. 4K RAW and 120fps at lower quality. And it's reportedly supposed to be an Epic killer?

Ehh, I think not.

Canon is 4 years too late to the 4k party, and they still haven't managed to develop a camera that's as versatile as the Scarlet at that price range. Especially when it comes to having an image that is flexible in post.

Interested to see what Sony does, but they too have catching up to do.

It might be is the street price starts to go down like what happens with prosumer goods.
Also interesting to note that the 3rd party companies are supposed to be announcing SDI 3G capture and compression units. Smart move letting the 4k data out a connector, lets the other guys take the ball and run, doing the compression. Gopro/Cineform likely to be involved, I would hope.

Red is probably working on something less glamorous : Reducing camera cost. A new board set in the camera using more modern silicon would be in the works both reducing power requirements and cost. Probably part of the preparation for the next upgrade path.

I would love to see RED offer a module that would send a data stream over fiber to a decoder box (RedRayPro?) that could process and display live 4K images with less than 1/50th of a second latency. Would be a terrific I-mag option, immersive environment element, etc. Just hoping...

That was going to be part of the RED ONE options many moons ago. I still think it's a great idea for specific uses.

By the way, Jim — can we expect a new firmware release corresponding with the start of NAB?

That will probably happen when the technology has moved on to the point where 4k is on a par with today's 1080p.

i think many of those dads are just looking for an excuse to show off their kids under the guise of showing off their camera. '-):

Or it just may be that like me, they have other cameras but never reach for them after receiving their Epic or Scarlet. By my count, I have 6 digital non-red motion capture cameras. Since receiving my first R-1, I just have not turned them on. I sold one camera, a Canon XL-1 for about a quarter of its original value, but these others would not be worth the trouble of selling. Plus, they require a certain software to open their footage as their workflow is proprietary and not mainstream enough to warrant other NLEs to open them, and in the case of the old Mini DV tapes, I need those cameras to look at footage on my newer computers, should I ever wish to do so.

I understand your rant, however. It has been a financial battle for me to get here and I have sacrificed much (or at least a normal person would call it sacrifice, To me it is just the new normal) to be able to own RED cameras. But one thing that gives me great satisfaction. My two Epic X cameras will never join those other six obsolete cameras laying around just gathering dust. And I fully believe these will be the last camera bodies I will ever have to buy.

We can't wait for the C500 announcement (which obsoletes the C300). Or the 1D MK III. They both add to the advancement of the industry. But we have a few announcements of our own.

Obsolescence obsolete.

Jim

If the rumors of the C500 is true, I guess we finally have two competing cameras - at least in terms of image quality. It will be interesting to see how our tools of trade will develop from here on :)

Kristen, I am sorry but this is offbase. No one is entitled to cameras. Those "Pros" you speak of have worked really hard to be able to afford them.

I want a bigger house, so my kids have more space to play, I can have bigger offices, my wife can have a bigger art studio, etc. We have to work really hard to achieve that. No one is going to start selling us big houses for dirt cheap just because we really want one and feel our lives would be better off because of it.

The prices of cameras have come way down. 6 years ago, many of us would not be here discussing owning this level of camera. Let's be thankful the prices are reasonable.

And by the way, I'm a bit offended by the tone of parents filming their kids with RED cameras. Yes, I have done that and I'm very happy I did. My daughter's early years are in archive quality media format. I don't apologize for that. I'm fortunate that it worked out that way.
