  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

JPEG is DCT. JPEG2000 is wavelet. QuickTime supports JPEG2000, but the implementation doesn't seem to be optimized well enough to handle 1080p playback. (Or, at least, it wasn't the last time I tried.)
 
Jim, without any doubts, you can see from all of the posts tonight, that these are the ardent core Redheads. Anything short of the footage will be considered sacrilegious and quite simply, unRedly (obviously a new word).

While we await the footage to go up in whatever format you decide upon, we (I) will NOT sleep!

Not sure if someone suggested that but...

What about a DVD with the highest quality possible. SHEER codec would be nice. Highest quality PhotoJPEG quicktime is easily playable at 2k and 11 minutes would fit a DVD and have great quality (you elready post grabs in JPG so should be the same but moving). With a JPEG2000 file we could reencode it to other lossless format for viewing.

That could be added in the store... for some $
 
Why don´t you watermark it and do a 35mm filmout? Loaner prints could be made available to professional organisations worldwide, labs etc.
 
Showing people what is possible with a new digital cinema camera by lasering to film just seems backwards. Nobody makes a drawing to show you how well the newest digital SLR performs...

Give me half an hour with my vernier's and i'll make one myself (i'll even reverse engineer it into SolidWork's seems that's RED ONE's Creator (and my prefered CAD application). ;)

PS. Jim, some drag racing footage will be awesome. I'll show my father and get him exciting about technology just that little bit more (which will bring him up to 0) as thats an interest of his! I will even post footage of our supercharged 1000+ HP Studebaker when its finished and all shiny when i can buy RED's Pro Pocket Camera to get the footage with. :)

I would much rather watch a 1080p or 2K h.264 movie (even 720p would be good) than watch it on youtube recorded with a video camera at a screening... Please post it online.

First off, those stills look freakin' amazing. :love: I am aghast at how good they look and the amount of detail is incredible. Someone suggested printing a few 35mm/Super 35 prints as "demo reels," but someone else pointed out how that would defeat the purpose of an entire digital pathway. I must point out that film has at a solid 7-8 years left, and the "old guard" in Hollywood is not embracing digital as the future, just yet. Showing some of the old dogs the new tricks via the "analog" format, may very well sway some of the naysayers.
 
Thanks for the great stills, they look great - even on the crappy hotel tv I am surfing from...

Sadly I don' t think I will be able to put priority on going to Los Angeles, New York or even Amsterdam anytime soon. And I would really love to see the Peter Jackson movie, I am sure I am not alone.
So unless you guys are coming to Norwy to show it in 4K, please consider posting it.
a 1080p Quicktime will be awesome.
 
The RED team should just go on a worldwide RED roadshow, showcasing the footage shown and NAB.

Hit up some major theaters in big cities, etc. show the footage, theaters "accidentally" break their film projectors, and subsequently make reservations for the 4K projector...

That´s exactly what I meant, Sevenout. People tell me `yeah, on a computer screen, but how will it look in a theatre compared to `real´ film?´
I do hope that a RED 4K projector will speed up things. Market research estimates 17.000 digi-screens by 2010. A RED projector could easily multiply that number.
 
Grabs look really good.

As an observation however, has anyone noticed a lot of noise in the blacks? If you ramp up the levels in photoshop you get a noise patterning similar to what I get from a DSLR pic taken at 1600 ISO. Which doesnt seem right for outdoor work.

Was the ISO of the camera fixed at a high level, or different for each shot?

If for example I take a pic from my canon 350D at 100/200 ISO and ramp the levels I can see no noise at all in the dark areas, this isnt true for some of the stills here. The ones I noticed it on more are the rolling cig shot and the c/u of te barrel.

Sorry if I'm being picky here, but If it wasnt me Im sure someone else would have been tinkering in photoshop with them.
 
um.. compresed jpg should justify that i guess ;)
