  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - SCARLET DRAGON

One thing that did change though, is the 5K FF fps specs:
Originally announced to reach 48fps @ 5:1 it's now announced to be 30fps @ ?:1.
So that could mean that max fps changed but we still don't know. :)

Pow. Scarlet Dragon.

$14,500. Orders open tomorrow. This time it is ready... Starts to ship when we catch up a bit on existing upgrades... likely June.

  • 6K FF: 12 FPS
  • 5K FF: 30 FPS
  • 4K FF & HD: 48 FPS
  • 3K FF & HD: 64 FPS
  • 2K FF&HD: 96 FPS

Original Scarlet Dragon spec:
1-48 fps 5K FF at 5:1 compression
Max fps (2.4:1):
1-60 fps 5K
1-75 fps 4K
1-100 fps 3K
1-150 fps 2K

What can be compared is 5K FF Original/New - 48/30 fps - 37,5% decrease in capability
So don't expect miracles in high speed for WS formats.
Crude interpolation of original specs give:
Max fps (2.4:1) Original / New:
1-60 fps 5K - 37,5 fps
1-75 fps 4K - 46,9 fps
1-100 fps 3K - 62,5 fps
1-150 fps 2K - 93,7 fps

Hmm it seems Jarred was more generous than me :-)

Personally I would say disappointing decrease of originally claimed capability.
I can see that this 48 fps is haunting us European customers like a medieval curse. Really 50 fps couldn't be squeezed out of the system?

I must say I liked so much much much much much more the previous market segmentation between Scarlet 5K and EPIC 6K Dragon.
But I understand that this new segmentation is much more tailored for RED business then for end users - well if its gotta be, its gotta be.

Given the published specs I have opted for the Dragon Scarlet upgrade path knowing that I don't care much for 6K, all I wanted is 5K at decent speed - planned to be 60P at WS - perfect for my aerial work and 90% of everything else.
The sensor tech with new gen colour and dynamic range was more important to me and the 60P WS 5K was sufficient.
Guys that went for Epic path got theirs pretty much right away. One year later we are still waiting for the Dragon upgrade.
If indeed the Scarlet Dragon ends up being not able to live up to the 60P 5K-WS (and 150P in 2K-WS for that matter) - my "confusion" will quickly turn into bitter sweet disappointment knowing I wasted one year waiting for nothing.
The specs in the Scarlet Dragon upgrade option say nothing about being "tentative" or "estimated" - they are stated as the "technical specifications" of the upgrade.
We have made serious business decision based on these...
Don't even get me started on the possibility that new DRAGON SCARLETS might end up shipping before the DRAGON upgrades for the old Scarlets even begin.

Exactly, couldn't agree more. Please RED clarify these points.
Many thanks

Relax all.. WS vs FF. Will clear up when I land.

5K FF: 30 FPS

Spec from http://www.red.com/store/products/scarlet-dragon-upgrade:

1-48 fps 5K FF at 5:1 compression

That's FF vs FF, plus the comment from Brent...:

Yes, some of the original specs changed.

That equals one huge confusion at the moment.
Can't wait for the clarification...

Guys. Will you please listen and relax until we have all the data?

I mentioned it before: the specs Jarred announced are for FF the older high speed fps were for 2.4:1 WS.

So we just don't know all the details yet. No need to get upset before you know what's going on!

EDIT: I know about the 48 vs. 30 FF fps change at 5K (see above). But still we don't know the whole story yet.

If new Scarlet Dragon could make 50fps in 5K WS or 4K HD for UHD delivery in continuous and even more in burst mode, than will use it for wildlife documentary work, if not and not having money for epic right now, will have to start looking for alternatives...

Sell your existing Scarlet, body-only, for $5k or so + shipping costs. Pay what you had saved up for the upgrade initially, $9500, to get a brand new body and clean clock.

Anyone else thinking that looks like a much better option now?

LOL

LOL

That would be breath taking!!:w00t:

I am absolutely happy with the new Scarlet Dragon. I wanted to buy Scarlet Mysterium X but I decided to wait after NAB Show. I knew RED is going to announce something new. And I am happy that It's Scarlet Dragon. And 5K FF in 30fps is outstanding! And maybe tomorrow RED will say 6K WS 30fps. :w00t: And that would be absolutely breathtaking.

+ fresh warranty and the possibility to get a new RED Armor.

Yeah, that does sound like an option - providing you can actually sell used out-of-warranty Scarlet for anywhere near $5K - especially given all the other options popping out at NAB. Don't forget that brand new MX Scarlet body is only little over $7K...
Providing the specs get clarified to live up to the published specs of the Dragon Upgrade - I looking more into just buying a new Dragon Scarlet and keep my old one as a backup body / low-cost rental for indies...
If the specs are off - I might end up cancelling my upgrade all together and just stick with a new Epic Dragon - keeping my old Scarlet as MX...
I really hope Jarred has some good news for us when he lands...

Right now RED site is down for maintenance, probably they are upgrading specs, soon will be able to see all capabilities...

OK sorry guys.. I can see now why people are sideways as my specs didn't line up last night.

Quick post so you guys don't jump off the bridge but RED.COM will have the proper updated specs shortly.

The charts get bit confusing now with the new Burst modes in different formats and the Broadcast options but this is a good guide below.

My apologies... I fucked that one up. The specs did change on the max compression ratios, more to come later.

Scarlet Dragon

6K FF: 12 fps
5K FF: 48
4K FF: 60
3K FF: 75
2K FF: 120

5K 2.4:1: 60
4K 2.4:1: 75
3K 2.4:1: 100
2K 2.4:1: 150

To me this makes the decision step up to Epic easier. But I know that I then won't be able to get to Dragon anytime soon.
