  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - SCARLET DRAGON

I hope "catching up on the upgrades" means they are going to start upgrading existing Scarlets soon ;D if not I might have to buy a new one just to get by... Thank you tons for adding 6k for stills. I think my 7D just got retired. Well I guess I might keep using the 7D for flash work until we get some kind of strobe sync to use my speed lights with the Scarlet.

I knew I shouldn't have looked here tonight I now have the gear fever!

Pow. Scarlet Dragon.

$14,500. Orders open tomorrow. This time it is ready... Starts to ship when we catch up a bit on existing upgrades... likely June.

  • 6K FF: 12 FPS
  • 5K FF: 30 FPS
  • 4K FF & HD: 48 FPS
  • 3K FF & HD: 64 FPS
  • 2K FF&HD: 96 FPS

Personally, ir the se are the final specs regarding fps, I am quite disappointed, as the original specs published so far mentioned:

REDCODE™ 12 and 16-bit RAW :
1-48 fps 5K FF at 5:1 compression
Max fps (2.4:1):
1-60 fps 5K
1-75 fps 4K
1-100 fps 3K
1-150 fps 2K

Considering it was very difficult to choose what upgrade path to go with (epix x or scarletd), as we have been given very little info this past year, I finally made up my mind to go for the scarlet D upgrade taking into account these original specs. Having 6K is great, but I feel that getting 30 fps at 5k instead of 60k, is a major let down (or 48 fps instead of 75 for that matter). If these specs are final, I simply wish REd could have shared this info at least 6 months ago, not 1 year after i purchased the scarlet upgrade. Oh well...

Also, I would really appreciate some more info regarding delivery.Who's first in line? The Scarlet upgrade or buying a new scarlet dragon? In this case, I really hope the upgrades have priority.

Cheers

I'm really happy with this announcement, too! Was worried we'd never hear about it! This camera is the PERFECT B CAM!!!

As I mentioned before: high frame rates are not announced yet. The fps in Jarred's post refer to FF / HD only. High speed is mostly achieved through 2.4:1 / WS crop. For that we have no true data. Maybe they will stay the same. We will just have to wait and see.
And on top: burst mode is coming tomorrow - as it seems for all cameras. So we might even get better fps for short bursts!

I think the biggest question right now is again:

Should I upgrade to Epic-X and try to make more money soon to upgrade to Epic-Dragon (of which I'm not sure that I'll be able to do it soon) or try to switch to Scarlet Dragon instead. The images from this sensor with all the Color upgrades are just insanely good...

6k back in, thats great. Thanks RED. It's great to see things are moving on for Scarlet-D.

I don't know what you guys are thinking, the upgrade-price is fair, the price for a new brain is fine. For me, it doesn't make much sense to keep the Scarlet-MX and buy a new Scarlet-D instead of the upgrade. You save 5000USD. Given that the new price of a Scarlet-MX-brain is 7950USD i don't think i can sell it for more than 5000USD. And hey, for a few grand more you can upgrade your Scarlet to a EPIC-D.

I'm curious about the final WS-fps too... :)

Thank you RED for keeping Scarlet alive and making it much better. I love it. Now it's a camera that can shoot so much more movies, it could have shot the Hobbit in HFR. And it has a much better sensor... Awesome and mind-blowing. There is really no more reason to treat Scarlet as B-cam or just a backup.

But i'm still trying to get enough funds together to get a EPIC-D. :D

Maik, I guess the two of us are just too similar - at least in terms of our camera decisions and choices :)

Im struggling with same decisions...

Thanks for the info, Patrick. That makes sense. Hope you're right

No doubt the image is stellar, but I wonder if the upgrade cost will be less, since the advertised specs have been notably reduced? The lack of 60fps (or more) at 4K HD is a tough sell for me.

I rarely criticise RED - quite the contrary. But I also have to proclaim I am little "confused" here...
As others have mentioned before - choosing whether to go for the Scarlet -> Epic or the Scarlet -> Scarlet Dragon option (both priced exactly the same) was extremely tough.
Given the published specs I have opted for the Dragon Scarlet upgrade path knowing that I don't care much for 6K, all I wanted is 5K at decent speed - planned to be 60P at WS - perfect for my aerial work and 90% of everything else.
The sensor tech with new gen colour and dynamic range was more important to me and the 60P WS 5K was sufficient.
Guys that went for Epic path got theirs pretty much right away. One year later we are still waiting for the Dragon upgrade.
If indeed the Scarlet Dragon ends up being not able to live up to the 60P 5K-WS (and 150P in 2K-WS for that matter) - my "confusion" will quickly turn into bitter sweet disappointment knowing I wasted one year waiting for nothing.
The specs in the Scarlet Dragon upgrade option say nothing about being "tentative" or "estimated" - they are stated as the "technical specifications" of the upgrade.
We have made serious business decision based on these...
Don't even get me started on the possibility that new DRAGON SCARLETS might end up shipping before the DRAGON upgrades for the old Scarlets even begin.

I really hope RED will clear this up and my "confusion" turns instead in a great relief and a full justification of my patience...

RED?

:sifone: Peter

I was betting on Scarlet Dragon because of the originally published specs also? 6K means much less to me than the frame rates. I honestly don't care much for 6K to be squeezed in over frame rates. I rarely if ever shoot 5K 12fps as it is. Great for photos, but that is not what I do. I have to admit, I am not very excited about Scarlet Dragon.

Edit: Just realized that said 2K 96fps full frame? does that mean no crop factor?

Does the reset on the SCARLET DRAGON pricing impact the price of a SCARLET DRAGON upgrade? Will there be a trade-in option for a new body?

Will the new body weigh the same or less than the grey body? Any info on weight comparison of the new camera?

It just blows me away how far these cams have evolved in 7 years....truly.

I am absolutely happy with the new Scarlet Dragon. I wanted to buy Scarlet Mysterium X but I decided to wait after NAB Show. I knew RED is going to announce something new. And I am happy that It's Scarlet Dragon. And 5K FF in 30fps is outstanding! And maybe tomorrow RED will say 6K WS 30fps. :w00t: And that would be absolutely breathtaking.

The upgrade price seems a bit steep considering the price to purchase new and with the specs decreasing... Lots of thinking to do today

Don't count on it. Scarlet Dragon has been announced a few years ago, and 6K has been omitted until today. Scarlet M-X has the same 12fps for 5K. Don't expect that 6K - 12fps to change!

The specs state: 5lbs. - body only

EDIT: if weight is essential: maybe a CF side SSD (don't know if these work with existing non-CF bodies, but why shouldn't they?), a magnesium mount and using a redmote or the new switchblade will help "lose weight"
