  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - REDRAY IN STOCK

Hey Jarred, I'm curious about this as well. Really would like a player for 4K content but am curious if future firmware upgrades are in the pipeline for these players / ongoing development? Are there any features that are currently disabled besides the distribution partner we should be aware of?

Since Redray firmware is apparently final (no more development) and therefore Redray will only play red files I wonder if the red codec
will have further improvements or is also frozen as is on this device. I have to make a decision if I want the device delivered or not.
Part of that decision is depending on the answer to the question if Red will have a follow up box with HDMI 2.x and more file formats or not. Any official information
from Red in this matter?

This sentence made me wonder too. This baby has still so much potential, but it will probably never get used to the max. It was announced with up to 120fps playback, so there was hope for HFR and/or 3D in the future, overcoming the HDMI1.4/1.3 limitations could be done with a external addon.

Is there a way to setup a content-server for REDRAY? My own little ODEMAX with direct access from the player and DRM?

Is the codec-development halted too? No more plugins for Premiere and other software? No support for higher fps? Not even 25p? No HW-encoders? No support for CUDA/OPENCL?

If everything is on halt for REDRAY and .RED, then please consider releasing a SDK or something like this. Don't let it just die, it's one of the greatest efforts in this area. You have done so much right, others are already making mistakes.

Thank you anyway for getting it out before it's really too late, for being honest about the future and for the lower price-tag. Yes, it is currently the best player and the codec is kick-ass, but with no updates there is no real future and it might end up being short period of joy.

I'm sorry for you guys about what happened (or not happened) with ODEMAX.

With RED's trackrecord of pushing the envelope and implementing disruptive technologies, I think it is unnecessary to make too much out of the "no further development" statement. .RED has such a huge potential that it is just a matter of time before the "dam bursts" and the old mpg/avc codec-cartel falls. This is just my gut-feeling, I might be wrong, I hope I am not, lets just make sure to create great content for these channels. :)

O don't worry.. the SDK for REDRAY is still open and a content provider or anyone else can come along and develop apps for it.. but we are not going to wait any longer for that to happen and we just want to be very clear on that, and it wouldn't be right for us to release with that feature missing and not tell you about it.

It's important to note that there are not only a ton of individuals out there with REDRAY players already using them as players but there are also alot of individual companies out there using them as players, there are some customers that have HUNDREDS of them in deployment in applications running 24/7.

REDRAY is not dead.....

Thanks for the clarification Jarred. That sounds much much better.

Can we get a 4K .RED version of LOOM to play on this thing? Pretty please? (:
+1! And the other shorts from RED. How about the famous "Crossing the Line"?
And don't forget to release the WOLF-shorts in 4k too. :)

Don't they have that cool looking USB stick they could bundle with the player? ;) At least for us RUs? hehehe...

I'll still have to hold of on a redray for myself. need the screen first ;)

Yup, but it will only 30 Hz max as it doesn't support HDMI 2.0 unlike the Sony 4K TVs do.

Be careful with that. The Sony 4K TVs that are launching this year, shipping between later this month and july depending on model, do support 4K @ 60 Hz and have full HDMI 2.0 bandwidth. Current/previous models are upgradeable to HDMI 2.0 via firmware, but are still bandwidth crippled to 10Gbps. The 84" 4K display and 1000ES projector, as well as Sony's larger Cinema projectors, are upgradeable to full HDMI 2.0 via a board swap. The current 600ES (500ES in other markets) and the 1100ES are full HDMI 2.0 compliant.

I think Sony and a few other companies offering "HDMI 2.0 firmware upgrades" are in for a rude awakening and possible class-action down the road here when 4K Blu-Ray and other full HDMI 2.0 delivery methods arrive and people with older "HDMI 2.0" displays are still stuck at 30Hz.

I'm also not too happy with Samsung at the moment. They sold a ton of 4K TVs last year with their external OneConnect box that was to be upgradeable to HDMI 2.0 and other future options. They ditched the OneConnect concept on this year's TVs and apparently have shit-canned the OneConnect upgrade product. The latter part is just rumor, it's not officially dead, but no announcements or comments and any questions directed at them are either ignored or answered with a "we don't know what is going to happen" response.

Deal... will post them all.

I think* one of the ethernet ports is enabled? There are 2, and the spec sheet lists one port under what is available, and then lists the gpi and an ethernet port as being disabled. Can someone confirm?

What? The SEK-2500V OneConnect upgrade box (hdmi 2.0/hevc/quadcore) for the 2013 4k tvs will be available June 1st in the US. Samsung is the only manufacturer of 2013 model that is upgradeable to h265/netflix 4k streaming, etc. The new 2014 9000 models continue to use the OneConnect box for future upgradability, just the cheaper series does not. Nothing to be unhappy about there.

Not sure the point of RedRay now with out a distribution partner? Super compressed, 6 channel sound, usb 2.0, hdmi 1.4
You can already playback h264 4k clips off a usb stick directly on the samsung and sony units at least, now with hevc support on the new models quality should be pretty great.
For higher quality get a hyperdeckpro2 or a kiproquad and gain 8 chan sound, less compression and sdi outputs.

RedRay, very happy with mine. Stunning in 4k.

RedRay is alive and well..a beautiful thing. iPhone photos don't do it justice. So happy to have mine. For trade show use and displays it's just been so worth it.

Are you finally selling the .RED encoder plugin? I've been trying to get one for about 5 months, no luck. It seems there might be more reason to buy one if there's more content...
