  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - REDLINK DEVELOPMENT KIT

So can sombody explain... I though the camera had Wifi inside allready, no? I mean we seen the RED ipad app running long ago even though it has not been for sale.
So what is this thing doing more exactly, is it an upgrade to the current / old WiFi antenna thats ontop of the camera body, or what is actually inside this little redmote click on kind of box?
To me red could do the same without this unit, just allow 3rd parties to an SDK, no?

Then we could still use that new XL module.

No - the camera does NOT have WIFI in it. Redmote is not WIFI. There IS an Ethernet port (LEMO connector) on the back of the camera - which allows you to hard connect camera to a router - but no wifi ... until now :)

I'm probably being dim witted here, but how does this intergrate into cam with a V Mount configuration? Love to know more. Thanks!

Maybe I'm wrong, but going by the name "REDLINK DEVELOPMENT KIT" it seems this may be more for developers to use to create apps and more production ready add-ons will be available in the future that include REDLINK functionality.

THat early ipad app was for Meizler and it's integrated wifi-module if i remember correctly, it did not work with a barebone brain. The REDMOTE wireless protocol is something else, not standard WiFI.

Then we could still use that new XL module.
Thats one of the key thing here for me.
I'm glad i haven't sold my Dual and Quad modules.

So how did TED control his epic with his Ipad in the past? Did he have a magic epic then?

Just so i understand what is the antenna on the top of cam transferring then? I always though it was wifi. First a poor one and then it was replaced with some improvements, no?

Im sure I seen Ted play with the pad without any additional modules, not only with the meizeler, no?

For the quad battery and dual battery thing, those are useless if you want to use FF and wireless video or more than two power outs. then you need the XL and the +1....

I'm also confused about this. I though the camera already had wi-fi capability (heretofore untapped).

Great Price and Options! :o)

Just a geeky wish, as I wrote my doctorate in "Computer Animation", so bear with me: I would like to have some parameters animate-able, e.g., (Rack) Focus, so I get an option for timing of such. ... and I would like to get an export of such, perhaps as simple as a spreadsheet.
With such data one could supply CG/VFX cameras and put the Focus change in motion -- in sync. (No eyeballing anymore if a rack focus needs to be matched. Or any other change.

Would I buy one and make tutorials for Cineversity.com with such a functionality, of course -- in an instant :o)

Have a great time at NAB.

Not a day late not a day early... perfect timing. If I look outside I'm sure I will see a double rainbow :)

We actually got this thing to behave as should the same day as this SDK, lens control thing comes out. What could be better for highspeed industrial robotic moco than programed EF focus and iris control. :) Normal lenses and motors does not really handle super fast focus changes. like fraction of a second from infinite to close range etc. Quite easy to break the lens in half when trying to do it... on EF lenses not so much. They are built to change focus faster than most.

Also I been on and off about this robot development for some time. building it around the dragon was the plan but then the phantom 4k came available and I figure that possibly should move in that direction. to get camera speed to shoot exploding tomatos and such things... well then red comes with the new firmware.. bingo burst mode... :) Jippie!

I just hope we can shoot ultra sonic for quarter of a second or such in 6k. That's all we need. So hold thumbs for burst mode tomorrow, if the stars align and all is right we will put full force on this robot stuff. All the bits are there now. We just need to push the effort towards it.

Björn - Ted only controlled via iPad an Epic equipped with Meizler Module - which featured it's own WiFi board. Note the 802.11 LED on its side...

Clearly is an initial low cost option to kick start that fact that The Internet of Things has now come to this camera - and this initial WIFI product enables 3rd Parties to start creating applications right now that will work on anything else that RED does in the future that they stick the board into. It's an open protocol that I am sure will extend into RED future products.

This.

I actually have relatively VERY little coding experience (took a few basic courses in college; I'm comfortable doing things in terminal), and I think I'm going to take the chance to try and create a useful app immediately. And I'll also probably jump on that Foolcat app. Hell of an advantage there, but glad to see that it was utilized properly to make something very useful.

Guys!

Guys.

Your laptop. Is now. A RedMote. Plus all the things that don't fit on the RedMote.

You have a RedMote++ for the less than the cost of 2/7 of a RedMote. Or 1/7 if you've got a Scarlet.

Bought!!! Hopefully I have time to create a useful app for this.

I agree on that it would be awesome if there quickly will follow up a module which can have further modules attached at the back of it like the V Mount Quickplate etc...

the function is soo sweet but having a quickplate v mount there is absolutley no way of using it even on Rods, since there is no cable..

So does that mean with REDlink and THC, you guys are no longer looking into a REDmote Pro type deal?

EDIT: Also, due to REDlink's programmability, would it be possible for other (cheaper) wireless hand unit focus controllers to work with it?

Also includes integrated THC wireless lens control module for wireless control of motorized lenses with any RED THC Hand Controller.

so i assume that means EF Mount Lenses that have internal Electronic Focus and Iris will be able to controlled.... a chance that the Iris will be controlled stepless?

And are there any other "motorized Lenses" that can use this, for example a Fujinon Cabrio Zoom with its Hand Grip, or will this fall under regular Lens with Motors?

thanks for rocking your costumers with all these great announcements!

I assume this is more up to the Lens than to Red. If the motor for the iris only works in steps, then there's nothing any amount of programming can do to alter that. Similarly, if the Cabiro has the ability to send and receive such information to and from the camera, then I'd bet it's only a matter of time before it's added to the Compatibility list; just look at how the list of Compatible lenses with Red (in terms of passing focus/iris/zoom info to the camera and into the recorded footage metadata) has continually grown over time.

We are proud to announce REDLINK and the REDLINK Development Kit.

REDLINK is our open protocol that allows 3rd parties to completely control the camera via REDLINK modules or via Serial/Ethernet.

Also includes integrated THC wireless lens control module for wireless control of motorized lenses with any RED THC Hand Controller.

OMG, be still my heart! I'm at my first NAB (have yet to visit the RED booth, that comes Tuesday) and I was somehow hoping for a miracle announcement of a REDmote pro that would FINALLY deliver on the promise of mature, smooth, professional wireless follow focus using the motors in intelligent Canon lenses. This sounds to me like the next best thing, or maybe the best thing, which is opening this up to 3rd party developers who have the time and specialized focus (pardon the pun) to develop a de facto REDmote pro.

Am I understanding this correctly or is wishful thinking deluding me as to what this really means? ARE YOU LISTENING, BIRGER ENGINEERING, et al? Does this mean Birger, or anyone else with the know how to move Canon focus motors in tiny, tiny increments yet do it in a responsive manner can give us still lens users what we've longed for for years, focus control without the extra weight, bulk, and cost of external motors and while using a native RED mount that doesn't require external power or voided warranties and that retains the ability to transmit all lens data to the RED touchscreen?????

If so, I am coming by the RED booth tomorrow with flowers for Jim or Jarred . . . or somebody.

Yeah so what's up, I thought the Optitron made canon lenses perfectly useable with the internal focus gears, but it never really became a known available product. So now somebody can write a simple program, we buy the red hand controller, and we can use canon lenses with wireless focus with no motor?

THIS IS HUGE, why is no one really talking about this? Am I missing something?

This is the exact thing I had in mind. Repeatable motion control. Depending upon how responsive the API or sendKeys functions are, it may just work.
