  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - RED SWITCHBLADE-M

Is there something you have to configure before the switchblade activates?
Currently trying it with the EVF + latest Dragon Beta and Release firmware updates ... can't seem to get the Swirchblade LCD display to work or its buttons to have any effect.

Putting the side handle back on restores functionality again.

No, you don't need to do anything special, it should just work. Please file a support ticket and send in a log file.

Thanks Trent & RED & my rep Sam for sorting me out.

Cause of pain : I installed the Switchblade before upgrading to a version of firmware that was compatible with it.

Problem now solved.

Relief. :)

OK I know I am an idiot but when I have the Switchblade installed with the current release firmware the switchblade works but now the touchscreen does not....

What am I doing wrong?

Is there a lock icon on the LCD Touch? Sometimes people lock the screend I've found.

Also check your priority order, maybe that has something to do with it.

So do I have a drinking problem? When I tried this morning both my LCD touchscreen worked and the Switchblade.
No more upgrades after Bordeaux

There is a step in the upgrade that says boot without the SSD in place. I have a hunch that my upgrades did not 100% complete first time around ... as I rebooted with the SSD still in. Following the upgrade to the letter - everything worked perfectly (in my case).

One would think the Bordeaux would have added claret-y to the upgrade. '-)

I am thinking about going to this from my side handle. Any pros/cons from people who have? Mostly curious to hear from those that switched. I don't use red volts anymore. Do you miss the handle?

I use both the Switchblade and the Sidehandle, although the Switchblade lives on the camera most of the time these days. It is handy to keep a REDVolt in the Sidehandle for hot-swapability…but I love the low profile and lighter weight with the the Switchblade. I'm a little bit concerned because no one has said yet whether the Swtichblade will be compatible with Weapon or not…even though the question has been asked a few times.

Thanks Tom. How are the ergonomics of the camera without the side handle?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard it was built in.

Sorry for reviving this thread for a question that's probably been asked/answered, but search gives too many false-positives to sort through.

I'm wondering if can you link control across all attached displays when in "remote" mode? Local mode (where all the camera options are on the Switchblade OLED) works fine, but I'd like to use Remote mode to control the red-line under the settings across all connected EVFs/Monitors, (whereas currently, remote mode only works on the single display connected to the primary monitor port on the SSD module, which isn't very functional for ACs to see what they're doing).

You cannot control the menus on all the monitors at the same time as there is only one "control surface". However, you can control which monitor is the control surface by changing the monitor priority list (Menu > Settings > Display > Priority). The highest monitor in the list that is attached and set to overlay mode will become the control surface.

Thanks for the response Trent!

Does that mean if I have a touch screen attached to the +1 and have the Switchblade set to Remote mode, the touch screen will not function as an input device (only serve as a display)?

Does the same go for when a touchscreen is in the +1 and an EVF on the SSD EVF/LCD Port with a Sidehandle (not switchblade)? Like is touch screen input disabled? ACTUALLY, a more direct question -- can the touch screen input and switchblade-local mode make changes to settings concurrently (or does one disable the other)?

I could've sworn you could make adjustments on the touch screen and sidehandle simultaneously (and if that's the case, how come you can't do it with the switchblade)? Conversely, assuming the SSD port is largely used for the EVF anyway (which isn't an input device), I suppose changing the priority to the +1/touchscreen makes more sense anyway...

(And yes, I totally understand that having this many inputs is massively redundant, but the switchblade would essentially be a mainstay, while the others would be attached/detached depending on the shooting situation -- e.g. gimbal, handheld, sticks, with or without an AC, etc.... I'd just like to set it up once and have it be the "ideal" for 90% shooting scenarios regardless of whats added on.)

Trent is speaking about the video outputs with priority menu. The Switchblade is independant as you have a "mode" button to switch from switchblade control to video output control (here the priority is important).

when I put the switchblade on the camera, it was so awesome I sold my handle.

Yo dudes, thought of another couple things that'd be nice to see on the switchblade/sidekick (or DMSC2 equivalent):
- a histogram/stoplight read out (like REDmote)
- instead of a timecode/timeclock "screensaver", a voltage read-out (so the AC can see what the battery is.)

(Are switchblade suggestions useless at this point? I figured with the sidekick being somewhat standard on DSMC2, it's still relevant.)

Having trouble really figuring out the best use for the Switch blade. I'm mainly doing branded content / commercial / doc stuff.

Any ideas to this end would be helpful... Was hoping to create a shortcut/hotkey that I could use to jump seamlessly between 23.98fps + 1/48 + Black Calibration 1 to 120fps + 1/240 + Black Calibration 2 etc....
