  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - Lightiron and their new 6K realtime infrastructure.

NOBody as bad ass as MC.

Nobody.

Great, but for me coming form VFX I need to look at it a bit with a smile. Light Iron do mostly colors as I understand... colors is quite a small part of postproduction. So just because you can grade a few layers of 8k in real time does not mean that much... Basically if you want to grade in 8k or 6k then thats very possible to do with small investments a few Pablos and what not, but then when you need to add your CG tiger into it... that 6k workflow is going to add a factor of x20 to very large VFX costs... I do not think that is what the producers are really looking for at the moment.

But it's always good to see that people push for the better. So it's great to see what light Iron is up to. But to me the sales pitch is a bit high I think, if people try to finnish in 6k they will run into a wall of costs even if they would get the light iron service for free... just saying.

Another good news is that all netflix productions is now set to be shot and finished in UHD or above.

Cioni is one intelligent, articulate an charismatic individual who plays the role of future technology champion very well, and Light Iron is definitely the very definition of the modern post house...BUT, how any of that infrastructure in any way, shape or form even remotely conforms to the notion of "Light Iron" is just nowhere near true. The procedures and steps of that road map may have changed, sending many archaic operations and associated gear into extinction, but as is usually the case, other procedures and their associated, shiny new gear have replaced them instead. That simple. If that is what it takes to be ready for the future, then the future looks to be accessible only to very few people, just like the past was. All that beautifully integrated gear's value shoots well into the seven figures, making the low cost of the acquisition tool a moot point in the bigger picture.

blahahaha

So basically……

Cioni is responsible for the rise of skynet?

I think Light Iron is building for, and marketing to, the big hitters in film and TV. Not that they can't or won't serve the smaller client but, being the "smartass techie upstarts," they really need to shine to upstage the longstanding players. They have, of course, successfully established themselves with this market already but they have to stay ahead to stay leaders.

The "rest of us" won't be gearing up with the hardware that LI has, but the principles he discusses remain relevant all the same. He is, and so should anyone, "skate not to where the puck is, but to where it will be."

MC is a real superstar and an articulate one at that. He is, in his field, what RED is in theirs.

I feel privileged to play in this sandbox even if it is in a tiny corner with just a few grains of sand. :-)

Google is responsible for the rise of SkyNet. They've been purchasing exactly the kinds of companies creating the technology necessary to create SkyNet.

Cioni is one of our best arguments to present to SkyNet as to why we're more useful as collaborators than enemies.

I don't see a video just a link to the Lightiron web site?

That was a cool video and I love seeing people that are forward thinking, like RED. I just hope LightIron has some better colorist/talent now. The last time I used them, regardless of the tech, the color was less than awful.
