  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - DRAGONcolor and REDgamma 4

Oh. I have read the OG post. Yes, do apply a curve in REDlogFilm. DRAGONcolor effects the chroma and tonal response of the gamma curves applied.

I tried RedGamma4 in RC-X, but how do I get this to work with Adobe Premiere CS6? This messes up my workflow now. Currently, my workflow is as follows:

Edit in Premiere, also includes Warp Stabilizing footage that needs it.
Export XML to RC-X
Color Correct all clips
Use "Fallen Empire - Reset RED RMD" to update RMD meta settings in Premiere
Add 30 points of sharpness to all clips
Export master with Lagarith Lossless Codec with max settings / resolution
Use Handbrake to render other resolutions / bitrates from master

Now, CS6 can't see RedGamma 4, since there won't be an update to the plugin. So what's a new workflow that I can incorporate RedGamma 4, and have my completed project from Premiere edited the way I have it? (I'm assuming exporting through RC-X, but how does that work?)

And there's my issue right there. It's just a plug in that pulls info, that's it! I don't want CC!! :(

What Brad said.

It's a plugin that needs to be developed for now "legacy" software. This is some of the same issue people who still work on FCP7 have with all the new and good features in FCPX.

In this world you need to update your software to stay on the path of modern workflows. I know many are super critical of the CC model (lets not have this debate in this thread), but Adobe has been releasing regular updates to all of their applications and it's cheaper than purchasing an upgrade to what was the previous Production Premium Suite. It's about 50% the cost if I'm not mistaken. So in my mind it's a deal.

Hmm. How will I know it's upgrading? I mean, there's nothing on REDmote display in evidence of that.

The way I did it was to have the camera fully booted, then dock the Redmote. Immediately a screen on the Redmote came up telling me I needed to upgrade the firmware. I confirmed and then it took about 25 minutes to do it on camera. All the while a status bar is displayed.

I start the calling for a renaming of the burst mode (including in camera UI) into:

"Low Compression Burst Mode"
"Compression Burst Mode"
or
"REDCODE Burst Mode"

Jarred, as for my photography, I think this is a really useful tool, but as you noticed, a lot of us were hoping for the original high fps burst mode.
Since we got our hopes up too high can you share a little bit of insight about the "other" burst mode?

Is the high fps burst mode:

a) never going to happen with the existing camera bodies
b) possible with the existing camera bodies, but just not yet?
c) we believe it's possible , but just haven't figured it out yet! :)

We are working on it... we really just got our head around the whole burst thing and are experimenting with burst modes for both Scarlet and Epics... this low compression burst mode we released yesterday is just the beginning of that.

You know us... we will continue to squeeze every possible ounce out of the cameras that we can for you... we have proven that. Just don't want to promise anything, as burst modes put a tremendous amount of stress on everything. Don't expect Dragons to go faster than they already are in 6k... the gains if any will be only on lower resolutions and record times measured in single digit seconds. Even then, it is likely never going to happen... but we will continue to press.

Nothing makes us happier than teaching old dogs new tricks.

This is awesome

Love this too. So cool.

Phil,

After all the smoke clears I would like to pick your brain about all of this..... It would be a big favor. So when I finish with Michael Bay and all those big Transformers this wee maybe we can meet......

Thanks

Peter

The read gamma 4 beta on my scarlet looks cleaner and detailed.. Am i the only one?

It's cleaner because it effectively crushes the blacks a bit more.

i guess i better load it up and start playing... extremely useful for capturing plates

One option is to use RedLogFilm and then apply a RedLogFilm to RedGamma 4 LUT. Contact Steve Shaw. I am sure he will have one in the not to distant future.

Absolutely Peter. I'd love to go over some notes and thoughts with you about the new color science.

Great talking tech with you today Stacey!

I don't know you but, it makes my Mx footage kind of "Filmic", and i really like that..

Let's pray for a final cut pro X upgrade now..

You just made one german reduser a very happy camper - again. Even if the high fps burst never happens, hearing and knowing that you are still trying is all we can ask for. Thank you for being open on this. This should finally calm the whole debate :)

I just read this again, and had to smile... a big fat smile :)

"You will not be able to roll back to earlier firmware revisions than v1.7.10 after installing v5.2.9"

It would be a good idea for red to provide a redlogfilm to redgamma4 lut, just as important as having it in camera in my opinion.

Colm, what do you mean? redlogfilm exists. it's just a log interpretation of the RAW data. this is not in direct relation to redgamma4 but rather instead of it.
