  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - DRAGONcolor and REDgamma 4

"Low Compression Burst mode probably is a better description".. apologies if that came across differently.

Ah, well that is very useful too. I just love slow motion so much so I cannot get enough of it. :)

The firmware is locked when I try to download, why is that?
I tried to login with both our accounts, but no luck

EDIT: Third time it worked, weird

Jarred, could you please release REDmote firmware v9? My Epic is locked up in the RED SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT screen, and I can't select AGREE as my REDmote is not talking to the camera.

I think REDgamma 4 is great. But I have a little problem with the program. Nothing happens when I hit the m (you should se the as shot there). When releasing the m (with the mouse) I can se that it blinks something. Anyone else get this?

Yes. It was broken in the last release as well but I was hoping someone else had already mentioned it.

I start the calling for a renaming of the burst mode (including in camera UI) into:

"Low Compression Burst Mode"
"Compression Burst Mode"
or
"REDCODE Burst Mode"

Jarred, as for my photography, I think this is a really useful tool, but as you noticed, a lot of us were hoping for the original high fps burst mode.
Since we got our hopes up too high can you share a little bit of insight about the "other" burst mode?

Is the high fps burst mode:

a) never going to happen with the existing camera bodies
b) possible with the existing camera bodies, but just not yet?
c) we believe it's possible , but just haven't figured it out yet! :)

I LOVE the new firmware! I found one possible bug though. If I turn on the Horizon indicator it is not visible on the HD-SDI output if I choose Clean Mode even though I checked the box to display Tools. All other Tools are visible except the Horizon indicator. If I choose Overlay mode the horizon indicator is visible.

The horizon indicator is going to be amazing for Steadicam work. One other suggestion... It would be great to be able to make the horizon indicator line bigger. Either thicker, wider or both. That would make it easier to see from a distance on a sled.

Had just a quick play with it. Yes, the new fw looks great and after being a bit disappointed what the burst mode really is, i think it's a great addition for stills-work. Smart thing. But i'm with Patrick, please rename it asap or this will end up being a FAQ and/or running gag. ;)

The AE / Exposure tool is sweet - My Scarlet just became a consumer-cam :)
But in all earnestness, I am sure this is sweet for every ENG / EFP dude out there!

I know this is a fast moving thread, and I posted it once ealrier, but for those who don't see much difference in more subtle tonality, have a look at my colour spectrum comparison:

For those of us at NAB on an iPhone - maybe an text explanation to the differences you see in the provided spectrum

Just attach the Redmote to the camera and it will automatically upgrade. The process takes about 25 minutes.

Ha, fair enough - checking on my iPhone and the difference is more subtle... maybe people want to bear that in mind viewing anything colour critical (!)

Viewing on a decent screen the colours are all purer and more vibrant, with much more equal spread and smoother transition across the spectrum. Redcolor 3 shows a particular awkward transition mid-blue, harsher transition from orange to red, muddier deep red, and a lack of saturation in the yellow-green-cyan area.

Lots of positive changes IMHO - but yes, if you don't see much difference between the two strips, maybe consider your viewing medium :)

This may be a stupid question, but is Dragon Color meant to also be used with MX footage?

Thanks John, this is a great way to see the differences!

Looks good :)

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

I don't think it's a stupid question. I vaguely remember it being said by Red (and this could absolutely be incorrect) that DRAGONColor was intended only for footage shot on Dragon. However, numerous people have now said that DRAGONColor makes their MX footage look better.

I haven't looked at enough of my MX footage in DRAGONColor to have a good opinion. There are definitely differences. They're subtle. If it helps skintones, though, I'm all for it unless there's a technical reason not to use it.

RedGamma4, though, is lovely. Of that I am sure.

Try this guys grade the footage on gamma space of "redlogfilm" and view the clip 100%.
Change between redcolor3 and dragoncolor. There is not change.

Keep in mind before fanboys lynch me for this, the sensor is awesome the dynamic range is there, but again, it is not a significant change in roll-offs and skin tones. Lets accept it.

Are you looking at your histogram? Mine shows a change.

Hmm. How will I know it's upgrading? I mean, there's nothing on REDmote display in evidence of that.
