  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - DRAGON EPIC-M MONOCHROME

Any details guys.

Well they were rolling at ISO 2000 at the booth at NAB 2014. I cranked it up to ISO 6400 and it looked pretty damn good on the camera, but I didn't bring any files home with me. Looking forward to shooting with this black and white monster though. At 1:1 magnification it looked great.
 
Wish I could make it to NAB...:sad:. But still Jarred would love to see something, please.

But funny, how no info is coming out of RED itself especially since the camera comes out on 28th April. Maybe I am too eager to know not having tested the camera.

NAB "just" happened. Nearly every manufacturer is catching up after the show.

Don't know what specific info you're looking for that isn't in the announcement thread though. If the main question is what is the "base ISO", that's the wrong term in general. However, I'm thinking it's going to be presented as cinema ready ISO 200-4000. Likely a bit further too, maybe in the 5000-6400 range based on what I saw.

This camera was announced last week though. You'll be seeing and hearing a lot more about it real soon.
 
What specifically makes the Mono Dragon internally different from a RGB Dragon? Can a RGB be converted to a Mono? Same sensor . . . correct?

Not that easy. Same base sensor technology, it would need to swapped out/replaced to have a pure Monochrome Dragon.

RGB needs a filter for each pixel, and that takes light away. In needs to be de-bayered to be seen.

Monchrome uses each pixel only for luminance, no color filter. Which makes each pixel a "pure" information and has no need to be de-bayered. Hence the higher sensitivity.

It is not to my knowledge if the OLPF is different nor how much internally, e.g., the compression algorithm is different.

I would imagine that the monochrome is essentially a Dragon chip without the RGB filters. That would account for the increased sensitivity. Without recording Bayer RGB you have every bit of resolution the 6K sensor has to offer. That would account for the increases in detail and resolution.

But since the RGB filters are part of the sensor, all that would mean swapping the sensor to get a monochrome camera.

Base Dragon pixel is the same , and as some mentioned the rgb filters are removed which lets a ton more light in. We also developed an entirely seperate olpf to go with the monochrome sensor to make sure the pixel pitch and optical properties were at its best. Some " other " monochrome cameras skipped that part but it makes a huge difference... Specially in terms of resolution and sharpness. The monochrome is incredibly sharp..much sharper than the normal 6k Dragon which is huge for the stills guys.

Graeme also generated a new color science for it ( as odd as that may sound ) and now he is working on porting over ADD to the monochrome which takes things to a whole other level.

The tonal range of the monochrome is something you can never match by just desaturating or using some black and white filters over a rgb image... John Marchant can talk about that...
