  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2013..

Drat! I was only half-way through the new NAB thread Jim started before it vanished before my very eyes. Didn't read the last post so I don't know if the thread was removed because of what someone said or if it is just new policy that Jim's threads have a short shelf-life. Nothing specific in it other than saying that NAB would be more about what is available NOW rather than so much of what is being worked on for the future (although some of that was probably going to be touched on.) It seemed to be an update of sorts on the progress of the Red Player, Dragon, and other things they've been working on without offering specifics. Just saying that NAB would be about product available NOW! Any way, it does give us a specific time to realize expectations.
++ That was annoying reading through part of the thread only to have it go up in a poof of smoke.

Yeah not sure why it would have vanished, didn't seem like sensitive info of any kind. Like Ketch said, it's part of the charm of this place. It happens... Maybe Jim and Jarred decided to wait for the right time or a better way to say what needs to be said. Not that I saw anything wrong with Jim's post to kick off that thread. I found it quite motivational. Although, I think I'm more excited for NAB this year than I have been for some time. I'm salivating over the laser projector and Dragon. Besides, I figure they're going to have a few surprises too. :)

Hopefully the ghost message meant, that Dragon is coming along fine, maybe it's gonna be released a bit earlier than expected?

Fellow camera nerds...

Fellow camera nerds...

Best guess is that Jim's reference to "NAB - Dragon - NOW" put RED in the uncomfortable position of promising shipping tech on April 8th that still has some crucial developmental milestones to hit.

There's a fine line between being positive and using high expectations to get most out of your people and keeping faith with the faithful. Based on conversations with Jim, his posts and the way he conducts business; its likely he knows a whole lot more about managing such issues than I ever will. So whether he got carried away after a big success in engineering, wanted to chum the waters for NAB or is just having way too much fun to stay silent ;-) its all good.

FWIW I know if I was seeing what he was seeing I'd want to tell every camera geek buddy I had. See you at NAB...

Cheers - #19

Hi/
how to reservations for NAB 2013?

thank you

Yay! A troll party!

And you're invited too! I'm not consciously trolling though, and will take my post down now if you wish. Some people expressed surprise that the second NAB thread vanished and felt it was a complete mystery. Why do you think the thread might have vanished? When some guys write things like "You live by the sword, you die by the sword. You are the leader Jim. We are the soldiers. Bring it on!", surely anything looks like trolling in comparison?

Threads vanish all the time. I wouldn't read too much into it. It's part of the fun, mystery, intrigue. Ok I'm sounding like the intro for Fantasy Island now...

HA! That's actually pretty funny/true.

That said, I think they were talking more about your 'I wanted a RED, now I want a competitor's product' comment.

May I say something about the vanishing NAB thread please? The speculation here is strange as the answer seems pretty clear (I'll delete this post in a day or so because I don't want to cause any trouble).

I think the thread was taken down because Mr Jannard admitted to being genuinely "nervous", and I think he also said RED were left "scrambling" in the very opening sentence.

It has to be admitted that for some years there has been a mentality in Reduser of poking Sony with a stick over 4K. Sony have finally responded in a very big way, and NAB is now looming. Despite the lawyers being out, it's turning into a colosseum of technology face-offs. Some posters on other sites are saying that it is now the beginning of the end of Red. A small company like Red would surely feel the pain of setting the highest standards, but lacking the firepower of a gigantic corporation to bring them to market always on time, hence the reason Mr Jannard kept emphasizing "NOW".

An admission of nervousness at this time is surely music to the ears of Sony, Canon, and Alexa. I originally came to Reduser with the menatlity of "MUST get a Red, MUST get a Red" (but will probably try for Bolex now). Imagine a Sony or Alexa rep at NAB saying "hey, everything really does change".

The pressure must be absolutely enormous. It is really surprising the thread vanished ?

Saied, I took issue with your characterization that Jim's 'nervousness' and 'scrambling' was because he had doubts about RED's new products. I've been a RED watcher for a long time and my observation is they do not get 'nervous' from lack of confidence. If indeed they have something come up that is unexpected, they get 'busy' and fix it.

And quoting the kids on another forum who are saying this must be the end of RED because they can't conceive of anything lasting more than a few years before the next big thing (whatever that is) dooms them to the dustbin of technology? That is obviously you using their words to do a number on RED.

Small company like RED? I know the US govt. tossing around our trillions of tax dollars like they were dollar bills makes us think billions of dollars are trivial amounts. RED is billionally WELL funded... you can trust Jim on that.

The reason I used the troll word on you is because the tone of your post says way more than your words, which were dark enough. But added with the tone it becomes pretty obvious you have negative feelings toward RED and want to do harm to their reputation as an acquisition and exhibition leader.

So, in my mind... troll you be.

Hi Elsie, I've removed my post (if you decide to remove yours then the main record is gone) and my Bolex comment was virtually an aterthought. Now a troll free zone. I would love to see a Red camera in action, all the best.
