  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB '11 "Surprise" Guessing Game

My guess would be a fully extended Epic with all modules working. Battery Module, I/O Module, Proxy Module, Redmote Pro etc.

Why: There was always a lot of talk about the working brain but not so much about the module development.

@ Sanjin...1000$ USD RED product. I don't want to bet against you. You have a good track record at predictions.... Sure why not. (more like 1500 I think.)

@ Jim Retar...1080/2K module. I sure hope so. There has been much talk about this. Hopefully it will support MXF too with 8/10bit selective (likely 8bit and thats OK).
good place to use all those CF cards. Red can say the 8bit 150mb/s file is an offline codec....but people will use it.

@ Ken Willinger...Streak filter...ROFL!

I will add...a 75-150 2.8 RED PRO Zoom. Why? BnH photo not carring the DigitOptical OEM lens. Needs a refresh.
4/5K Real time full debayer box for multicam broadcast. Why? Market Vacuum.
4K projector with Epson collaboration. Why? 4 years of chatter about it.
Monstro is alive and working in a early prototype. Why? The sensor has been around for a year already. Should at least be in Franky stage.
Standard RedRay player for immediate pickup at NAB. Spins dicks too and plays most digital file types from USB/esata etc. REDRay codec package released to public the week before.
Piles of Matte Boxes at NAB!!!

Actually I have no idea how RED ray will be unleashed. Very tricky stuff.

Yikes!!

Yikes!!

thousands of scarlets and epics ready for on site NAB pickup, at a discounted NAB price :)
Oooh in that case, I better clear one or two of my credit cards ;)

4k/3d monitor for 5-10k
why?: everything beside the monitoring is in reds product line...why not add a monitor.

I'm guessing this too as it is something people really need !
The lack of a quality 2K-4K monitor is something really noticeable in the market place.
I am not sure why the display market has not kept pace with the camera one.
My only guess is the manufacturers are not quiet there, price and supply wise,
and are concentrating on 3D instead.

A 2K- 4K monitor with Dual Link, Component, DVI-D and HDMI,
with full 4:4:4 Color Space 10-14 bit would be amazing.

2 models 17" and 30" with xlr power on the 17".
This covers most On-set and Color Correction needs.
Maybe even a wireless unit that can be attached to the monitor and used in
conjunction with the Epic and Scarlet Wireless Module !!!

My guess is something in the monitoring/playback dept. RedRay, 4K 3D monitor, that sort of thing. It's the missing link in the chain from acquisition to distribution....

That, and Peter Jackson will be on hand at the Red booth to showcase early Hobbit footage....

Cheers from Tokyo!

Paul

What makes sense is for some way to see glorious 4K affordably...Jim talks about it all the time but many of us only ever get to see in 1080. No better way to get converts than by showing!

I have almost nothing to go on and Jim and company are always full of surprises.

Having said that, my guess is Red will have small surprises leading up to the big one, as is their way:

-Full lineup of Epic mounting options: Gunner, Bulldog, Monster.
-Red Focus (I know Jim didn't mention it in his production schedule update, but that gives all the more reason to have it drop at NAB considering its long development history)
-Full lineup of Red Anamorphic Lenses (demo models only, production models a year away).
-Announcement of the 3 unnamed biggies to be shot on Epic.

And the big one:
PJ making a personal appearance to show off some 5K Hobbit footage.

So, why PJ as the big surprise?
The Hobbit is on everyone's radar and PJ loves RED and the EPIC. First chance to view Epic 5k 3D showcasing the new abilities of the RED RAY PRO.

Jim flew all the way to New Zealand to showcase the EPIC for PJ and could very well have locked him in for a NAB appearance back then. Let's not forget about "Crossing the Line" which Jackson shot to show what the Red One was capable of.

Of course I could be way off.

@Joe - noting the respect, knowledge and humor (not to mention pull) around most if not all your posts, a most dedicated Honduran RED fan unable to attend NAB humbly requests the creation of a RED NAB'11 photo thread where all NAB attendees can post their pictures when the time comes. I'd do it myself, but please refer to the first line in this paragraph as my reasoning as to why you'd be a better person for the job.

Also this specifications are subject to change without notice.

As you can see that some the major tech specs were cut @ 1/2 from the existing RED ONE tech specs.

That's one of reason the new lightweight camera is called RED TWO.

All that means is to deliver a product with specs, weight and price that any of "1080p alliance" member can't make it any time soon.

To spread use of REDCODE even wider and that's the way how you can concur this digital cinema acquisition format battle.

After that you can any offer size and format you want (4K, 5K, 6K, 8K, together with 3D, 4D, or whatever is coming next +++)

The future is REDCODE to the masses

that means to make a camera for $1000 bucks

with the best IQ possible (no line skipping, aliasing, moire, etc...).

Sensor size of S35mm (max 2K DI) and interchangeable mount (PL, PV, Canon EOS electronic, Nikon F electronic, Leica M, Leica S2 electronic, etc..).

Good idea, except if by "max 2K DI" you meant the sensor itself would max out at less than 4K. I don't think 2K's where Jim wants to go. As it is, Red's rationalizations for the 3K Scarlet in light of their "$K is the future" stance are less than convincing.

PJ making a personal appearance to show off some 5K Hobbit footage.

I agree. High likelihood that this is the surprise. He shot a video for Red Day last year, why not make an appearance this year. Makes the most sense.

A new, affordable 2k camera, however, does NOT make sense :) haha

I ll stay conservative...

Prores log C 2k proxy module for Epic and Scarlett.
Because of the Alexa so called benefit of prores.

Support of DCP format on Red Ray.
Who would buy a dedicated server that only support a proprietary codec?
