  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mysterium-X ISO ratings...

I didn't mean to compare a VDSLR to a pro cinema camera Jim. It is just that this digital low-light acquisition stuff is the new toy, so we have it very present. There is no comparison between the weirdness a 7D puts out onto an mp4 and the film challenging purity that Red puts out onto Red Code RAW. If anyone needs that explained then they aren't ready to be your customers anyway and need to go learn a bit more before knocking on your door to begin with.

Thank you SJ, but would you please re-do your test using Neutral with contrast all the way down on the 7D?

the funny thing is.. your basically forced to buy the upgrade.. I would get it regardless.. but Those who dont do it, will be left in the dust.. Im sure it will be a qualifying mark whether (is that the right way to spell that?) your camera works or not on a set again.

Yes! But Zakaree, don't forget how much you will save producers in terms of G&E crew and rentals, oh, yea... and time! One very small indie feature's savings would pay for the upgrade, alone.

Sambazon, Acai berry flavor? I see where Jim get's all that creative juices. Great choice of beverages. Oh and the images looks nice too.

There's not much Samba in the Amazon though. It's more like where I live.
Açaí is pretty good, specially with some guaraná syrup along with it.

:wink5:

FF Monstro clean @ ISO 1000, that will be crazy Jim. Now we're talking.
Michael Mann is going to love RED cameras from now on.

I just got some new M-X code... even better. I guess I should have waited to post until Graeme and the boys were further along. I'll give them a few more days to tidy up the code and then post some incredible 100% crops.

Please tell me you guys are taking Christmas weekend off...

Now it's my understanding that with the R1, ISO is just metadata. By shooting at 100 ISO or 800 ISO, it doesn't change how the R3D file is recorded. It just changes the ISO metadata tag and changed the output of the monitor. Is this right?

If that really is the case, then will the M-X sensor be the same, or will changing the ISO actually change how the R3D file is recorded.

ISO "rated" 8000 is "native" with a very big curve. The curve adds brightness, highlight protection and noise. The cleaner the "native", the cleaner the ISO rated 8000. M-X "native" is cleaner than M by at least 1.5 stops (maybe 2).

Jim

Probably why they will actually have time to post something. :hurray:

Um, my wife will kill me, but probably just xmas and boxing day for me. I'll still probably do some coding as you can't keep me away from this stuff.

I'm an addict. I know I am.

One can wonder how Mysterium would do with the addition of analog gain.

:biggrin5:

The point of this was not to say... "look. We just beat a DSLR in high-ISO.". It is only to give you some reference to see how much better the M-X is than the M sensor. I certainly do think that high-ISO won't be a big differentiating factor anymore when talking about camera options. Certainly not as big as RAW, frame rates and data rates/compression technology. At some point, shooting ISO 10,000,000 just doesn't matter if you are line-skipping and it is being recorded to H.264.

I'll get my new OLPF put in today so we get to see how that works. Also... Graeme still has a few M-X tricks up his sleeve.

I'm just killin' time with these posts... don't get too worked up. Every day a little better...

Jim

Jim,
The best reference for me is to know what actual light levels these images were photographed under. Knowing the intensity of the key light and the T-stop of the lens is the most useful information to know what the low light capabilities of the sensor promise to be. You could for instance, set the camera at ISO 1000, set a light meter at ISO 1000 and then overexpose the image (relative to what the meter says for your key light on the chart) and then pull it down with a curve. This would yield far less noise than exposing for what the meter says and bringing it up with a curve. So it's important (for me anyway) to know how the samples were shot in terms of light levels, T-stops, meter ratings, camera metadata ratings, and post curves. I'm very curious as to the low light possibilities of the MX and would love this type of information when you publish samples.

If not, no worries I'll be able to test for myself when I get mine! But inquiring minds want to know! :)

I second that. :) Hopefully it will be possible to know this info when the next shots are posted ...
