  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The MX sensor is physically larger right? 30mm x 15mm instead of 24.4 x 13.7mm? So was this test shot at 4K, 4.5K, 5K (i.e. part or all of the sensor)? And I assume it was daylight-balanced -- can we see the same subject and chart in tungsten-balanced lighting?

David... you can see a ton of tests on Jan. 16th. :-)

I'm just shooting these at my house in NV. All I have is a B2Pro here.

The M-X sensor is larger than the RED ONE sensor... I'm just shooting charts at 4K 2:1 because it is convenient, and I am scaling them down anyway. By shooting 4K I can more easily compare with stuff I have shot in the past on a RED ONE with original sensor. The new sensor in a RED ONE will "only" shoot 4.5K... as limited by the boards.

As for everyone's special requests... I'm not taking them. I have a lot to do and will post what I am shooting when I can. I'm quite sure that everything you want to know and see will be done fairly soon.

This is awesome!

amazing.. but there is a lot of violet. no IR filter on sensor?

Jims M-X-R1 camera that he used to take this shot does not have the new OLPF/IR filter installed in it yet... Both Epic and the R1 Sensor Upgrade program will share the same new OLPF filters that are better at blocking IR.

What is the maximum usable ISO for your taste, Jim? Also, what is the maximum ISO you will be able to adjust to?

I would say today that I find myself really liking ISO 500-800. Since noise slowly begins to creep in the higher you go from here... you gotta have a good reason to shoot higher ISOs. It is comforting to know that you can with this sensor. ISO 1000 is crazy good for this ISO and ISO 2000 very useable.

I'll carry an EPIC in handheld configuration everywhere I go. Since it will be used for stills and motion, I guess I might find myself in situations where I could use ISO 2000 or above. Images at these ISOs are really pretty good.

If you see an alien in a dark alley on a moonless night... you can get the shot.

Excellent. If these are results with R1 4.5 K limitation, imagine EPIC 5K mode. WoW.
Congrats Jim.

Jim, congrats on that ISO 1000 footage.
Looks like the blacks are a little bland, a simple black crush would improve the image appearance and lower noise. Awesome!

Questions of the future:

How do I make my film look red-like?
What is the red-look anyway?

Considering the overcranking abilities of Epic X, sensitivity is going to be very important. Glad to see that big strides are being made.
