Happy New Year from Wellington!

When I first started posting in these forums people remarked on my 'other' job... I seem to recall requests to put a RED in a fire truck.

Well it's still at the stage of raw ungraded footage, but shortly before I left the USA, I went one better and put my EPIC in a *fire*

So, a tiny teaser :-)

Please tell me you have good fire damage insurance Mike!, lol

Much respects,,,,my little brother is a firefighter, make sure the cam doesn't get smoke inhalation lol

OK here's something a little less high-quality... maybe I should have used that GoPro after all lol...

Straight out of the camera, 2000 ISO so you can see anything at all, uncorrected, unstabilised, YOU try doing better in a fire, wearing 70lb of gear, sucking air from a cylinder, balancing an EPIC & a Clutch on your shoulder, and pulling focus at T1.5 when you can't see a damn thing through your facemask...

But it's REAL.

This is what it's like to be me, on a good day :-)

Cool shots! They bring back memories!

I had the privilege to shoot some fire fighter training videos a few years ago, maybe around 2006 I think. The HVX200 was the hot camera at the time, and I did bring mine into the fire to get some 60fps stuff. A single shot from those shoots is still on my reel and I think it's still pretty neat looking.

Our primary cameras were DVX100Bs, and we wrapped all the cameras in heat resistant bags to keep them dry, the same ones you use to keep your turkey moist in the oven. It worked pretty well, and all our cameras survived except for one which got too hot, and all the buttons on the front of the body stopped working, which sadly included white balance. Luckily the show had purchased that camera used, and we knew it was going to be the closest to the fires. The coating on my UV filter on my HVX didn't make it either, but thankfully the rest of the camera was completely fine other than a horrible smell that lasted about 6 months.

It was awesome to see the firefighters work, what incredible teamwork and work ethic. They were gracious and patient with myself and the other shooter when they trained us, and over the shoot days. They did make fun of us a bit for going through a lot more o2 than them, but whatever!

Standing in a burning house is an absolutely insane and indescribable feeling, and it seems silly to say it I guess but the heat was unlike anything I've ever felt. I remember being physically unable to stand still because of the amount of adrenaline in my system after being in my first few fires.

Anyway, neat stuff! I do actually know what it's like to work in a fire wearing full turnout gear and scba and pulling my own focus! We are part of what must be a pretty small club. High fives!

I do like those footage, I was a portuguese fireman for the last 15 years, so its always a pleasure to remember those times...

Visceral stuff. Thanks for posting. Considering your challenges the first, graded clip is pretty spectacular!

I wonder if the fan came on at any time?? grin...

Stunning shooting there Sir! Look forward to the final cut..

Very lightly graded; it has a long way to go.

The second clip, I've got a good mind to post an R3D and challenge: grade THAT! :-)

It looks like shit, especially with crappy compression, but as I said, it's *real*. It actually puts you in the fire... that's what it's like. That guys hand that comes in and hits the camera, he's doing a search... he can't recognise me as a fireman, or even see me, from three feet away. Maybe the best bit is the audio lol...

There's more to come...
