  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My take on the RED Dragon...

I just assumed my RR card would work with 6k Dragon footage just slower. I had no idea this might not be possible. A clarification from Red would be very welcome. I did not take up the offer on the RRX card based on RR and Dragon being compatible. I hope I wasn't wrong.

I'm pretty vague on this and because I'm vague, I probably shouldn't even be responding. But I THINK I remember this being answered some time ago and that it would work with Dragon footage... but slower, as you said.

The reason I think I read this somewhere is because for a moment I considered buying a used Rocket card. But then I realized that at 5 times as powerful, that means the ROCKET-X card is less than a thousand dollars per old ROCKET single card power and has a longer guarantee which says they have more confidence in the ROCKET-X staying trouble free. Plus, you get that powerful card in a package that only takes up one 16x lane in a PC.

EDIT: What Bob said.

I would love to have a closer look at a few grabs, but they will come as they come.

Brook and Jeffs comments are interesting and good.

The MX in the R1 was a lion in a cage

The MX in the Epic was a beast let loose.

Because of the possibility to change the boards and thus AD and processingpower alongside the sensor, Dragon has the chance to come out screaming in the Epic.

Skintones...
Ouch...

Because the difference in strategy between RED and Arri, it was more likely that Arri would hook up with more people who would know how to get good skintones in greater relative numbers initially.

But it is not really an issue. And actually, because of the optical filtration on the Alexa, methinks the Alexa images look more uniform than the RED ones.
It is a bit like a sweet which ends up being too sweet.

But that - of course - is just a subjective observation.

Whether I can make the upgrade or not, I look foreward to play with the new toy. When it is ready.

I think it is only good that RED takes the extra time to make things right and then better.

There has been issues with RED. Potential in QC has not been one of them.

And to make everyone and his girlfriend upgrade from the current Epic... It has to be good.

So my guess is
It will be...

I like the the new attitude of swallowing a few bullets without releasing images until you guys feel it is right.

And I guess that when you decide to release images, we will all be taken aback.

Impatient as ever...
But then again, not that bad.
Have an Epic... ;)

Cheers!

All along RED has chosen to put as much power and control in the hands of shooters as they could. By dint of logic, it also makes it much easier to screw up.

Should RED have offered an "auto" mode like on a consumer camcorder?

Ummm if the auto mode looks better then yes. Kodak Vision 3 isn't for soccer moms but it has great look 'out of the box'.

any features in the works right now with Dragons in the wild? Wishfull thinking but it would be awesome to see something released around the same time as the Dragon rolls out....

So excited. Thank you to everyone at Red for working your asses off so we (the customers) can be rewarded!! What an amazing company to offer upgrades at reasonable prices that give us (in my opinion) the best camera in the world in a tiny customizable 5 lb package. Amazing. Not only that but I can easily say the past two years have been the most successful of my life and I owe a lot of that credit to Red. Now, what would it take for a Jim/Jarred/Graeme autographed side SSD module with my Dragon upgrade?

There are so many amazing products being released by Red it's overwhelming. It's almost funny how my Red gear works to pay for more Red gear. F'ing awesome. If only my other possessions would pay for their own upgrades (or "replacements" in their case).

Where there's a mother, there's a father! :001_tongue:

Same. We've got a couple of RED Rocket-X cards on order as well. Can't wait to get those. But since we have a chassis packed with the original Rocket cards already, and it's doing a great job, I'd like to keep that one running as backup or even location renders. Possibly store the unit in a second area we're planning. Whatever the case, if the Dragon is still compatible with the original Rocket, we're thrilled. If not... well, I won't be upset but I'd love to know to make plans ASAP. :)

Jim,

Thanks to you and your team for all you continue to do for this industry.
Your products have changed so many lives for the better. And now Dragon. It just keeps getting better and more exiting.

(feels weird saying this but "Flight" was the first RED movie to absolutely blow me away, not that the others weren't awesome, I just kept saying "wow" out loud throughout the whole movie - it looked better than any movie i've ever watched, film and digital)
When I see it, I'll let you know what I think. In recent memory, the most beautifully photographed and lit movie has to be Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, though that was 35mm. :-)

The MX Epic is a very good camera; as many have noted, if you can't get excellent images with it you need to up your game in terms of lighting, lensing, grading, etc.
"Lensing"?

Ummm if the auto mode looks better then yes. Kodak Vision 3 isn't for soccer moms but it has great look 'out of the box'.
From what I have seen, I agree. I wouldn't want to mess with it too much, though. I like emulsions to speak for themselves. Though I have not yet used it!

I'm pretty sure it will work, and I seem to recall being told that the current Rocket will keep on working with 6K footage. But things do often change in the land of RED and I figured I'd ask that question for sake of clarification.

Must be a Colorado thing - I asked the same question in the Jarred thread. Maybe one of the lads will weigh in.

I have two old Rockets...I'm curious how combining those two in a single 3 lane enclosure might perform versus the new one. Sounds like a good Jeff benchmarking question, whem the time comes....

Great to hear! Appreciate that this is an upgrade path. It's nice to know my camera will not be obsolete... but then again, my regular Epic-X is still far from being obsolete. Arri is talking 4k, I've been shooting 5k. Still lots of love before I Dragon it. Can't wait to see images though!

I'd be keen to hear about the future cameras that were planned. Any IMAX or large format sizes coming?

Jarred has confirmed on the other Dragon thread that it is still compatible, just not the same render speed.

--SNIP--it wont be as fast as MX footage encoded to the same resolution on the older Rocket. We have some things that will help things along coming, and leverage your GPU, but you can't expect the same render times.

Of course if your shooting 5k or 4k cropped on the Dragon, and then going to 4k or 1080p, then that is a different story.

Jim, Just gonna say it...I love you man. You are continually bringing our visual imagination to a better place. Thank you to you & weveryone at RED!

Don't sweat the small stuff lets continue to make history! I did the Epic upgrade but this whole Dragon movement has me on cloud 9 can't wait to here more. I wonder if people are going to do those corney pictures again

"Lensing"?

This referred to choosing a lens and secondarily to the angle of view. For example; some very experienced DPs feel like the Cooke lenses are particularly adept at creating pleasing skin tones.

FWIW I think lighting it the most critical part of getting good skin tones and overall color rendition. Expert color grading can fix almost anything, but for best results the lighting and makeup need to be right on.

Cheers - #19

It won't be a hard sell to clients anymore...I remember when the R1 first came out, I had a terrible time convincing my clients why it was better...the best way to show them was with the images it created, not with the tech talk.

The thing I hear most is along the lines of: "Where does it all stop? In two years, 8K will be the norm, then 10, 12...etc. At what point does hype/marketing surpass reality (i.e.- truly perceivable quality improvements)?" I have my answers for this but would love to hear what some of you think.
