  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My Scarlet Dragon arrived - noisy, but otherwise great!

I think its refreshing. Nowdays nobody complains on the skintones anymore :)

Wow it's really been a long time that I read a complaint about RED's skin tones. But as I stated in the first post of this thread: I love the camera and the pictures it makes! I just want to make sure that I didn't got a bad sample of a sensor.

I talked today to RED Germany and will eventually send in the camera if the new firmware doesn't fix it. Also I'll meet Jan so that we can test our cameras.

Theres something really frustrating about explaining again and again to people that should know, how to expose RED correctly. I say this from my experience, I'm not putting the OP's experience in question, as I haven't looked at these R3D's. It seems to be a constant struggle out there.
On the other hand, I had imagined that when it was stated that "2000 is the new 800" that that would help with the issue and create a more forgiving camera. But somehow it seems like the Dragon is less forgiving than the MX. That part mystifies me a little bit...

I understand that it's easy to say people are under exposing and giving themselves noisy images, but if an image is shot at 800 ISO and not pushed in post, it shouldn't be noisy, no matter how dark it is. I can put a lens cap on my epic and grab a frame at 800 ISO, and it's a quiet, clean black.

guys the FW will be out soon enough and i am sure many if not all of these problems will be eliminated. in the mean time there are plenty of ways to denoise the images. I think when the problems are dealt with the issues will be fine. As for if the 800=2000 ISO thing I am not sure if that will be definite since we all wanted better roll offs in the highlights... I am not sure if that means 1600 is the new 800 cuz we lost a little in improved highlights, but the reality is until the new firmware is out its kind of too early to tell where we will end up. Obviously all us current owners are hoping things work out well in the end...

and for the record i am available with rocket x for all your dailies needs, and i can denoise it too if you guys need! thanks!

This thread was worrying me for the past week... now haven gotten my own Scarlet Dragon I am relieved and glad I opted to buy a new Scarlet Dragon rather than update my MX-Scarlet to the tried and tested Epic.

Then I saw this tread and the noise issue became a threat to my investment... at least for a short while until I read that RED is working on it.

So what did I do.. first thing I booted up the camera? Yupp... play with the camera in dim light and at night...

I was so impressed, that I posted my experience here together with some Jpegs and R3D still and a HUGE R3D file to download.

Let me know what you guys think... I will continue to submit her to real life situations over the weekend :)
