Hi all,
I will place my order tomorrow and I'm considering what to include in the package..
I'd be glad if any of you could take a look at my configuration and point me in the right direction because
I'm not sure about some of the accessories...

I tried to examine each item carefully, not to make duplicates in my order.
I hope I achieved that : )

So Here is my order details:
(Note: I don't need the Red lenses... I'll use arri and/or nikon..)

What do you think?

I also need some answers; if you have the time..

- The Base Production Pack includes 2 x 18-inch STEEL RODS and I guess they are 19mm, right?

- I don't see any difference between left Red Handle and Right Red Handle..
But they are listed as different items in the red store..
The Base Production Pack image on the store shows the right handle mounted on it..
So I'll only include the left handle in my purchase.. Am I right?

- The ARRI 19mm BASE seems rock solid but do I need it? Or is the Red Bottom Plate does the same job?

- What I get from this image on Red.com is that I need to purchase
4 side handles to create the cage, just like on those images. Am I right?

- How is the 15MM ADAPTOR used? I guess I need 2 of them to use 15mm rods..??

- Have I missed any must-have parts?

Thanks for reading..

You need another top mount if you're going to use the top handle extension. Plus you'll need it if you're going to use rods and mount your cradle on top of the camera.

BTW: Are you going to be the first RED in Istanbul?

Thanks Steven.. I'll consider that..
I didn't have the chance to see any RED cameras here yet but I heard one or two people had placed their orders..
but I'm sure there will be lots of orders from Istanbul in the next months..

Cool. I also know some people in Istanbul who are interested in getting one, but I'm not sure if they've reserved them yet. I come to Istanbul around once every two months.

To answer some more of your questions, the left and right handles are in fact different. So yeah, you need to order the left one. All the RED rods are 19mm.

What are you getting the Red arm for?

Nice to hear that.. and thanks again for your answers..
I thought I could use the red arm for mounting not only the LCD but different equipment when needed, as well.. Thought it would be very helpful on the field since it's adjustable..

consensus, although limited so far, seems to be that the side handles aren't that useful, or at least don't end up getting used much, so you might want to reconsider getting four of them.....maybe start with one and see how it goes?
EDIT: just for perspective, I'm planning on building a cross hatch of a system, with the red handle and extension, two rods and two top handle mounts, and then build everything else around the arri 15mm baseplate. So a battery belt mount, etcetera etcetera. Less expensive and less weight. Also, to me a 7" monitor is already getting to be pretty large if you're doing many setups a day, and you've also got the viewfinder there as well, so getting pretty bulky for quick changes.
Incidentally, what kind of work you are using the Red for? This should be a consideration for what you are ordering.

Best of luck to you. I'm patiently gnawing my nails and slamming back tequila (couldn't do the cinqo de mayo Jon) waiting for an email.

EDIT: just noticed that you have no CF cards on your list. I'd get at least three of those.

good point steven-marc. I think the cradle battery plate is also detachable and can be modified for other configurations.

Evolve, think the side handles might be useful for mounting/attaching the camera on things;
mounting accessories on them and also help protect the camera...
But may be I don't need 4.. you're right..
EDIT:
I'll use the camera for music videos and commercials but especially for a feature film we're developing right now..
I already have sandisk CF cards that I use for photography.. That's why I didn't include them in the order..

Steven, I didn't realize that..
I'll cancel the extra plate and the quickplate..
I don't really get what the quickplate is for since there are those other
options that seem to do the same job (and already included in the base pack)

To answer your questions....

Yes they are.

- The ARRI 19mm BASE seems rock solid but do I need it? Or is the Red Bottom Plate does the same job?
Some people feel that the Element technica Arri baseplate has better build quality than the Red bottom plate. They do the same job.

- What I get from on Red.com is that I need to purchase
4 side handles to create the cage, just like on those images. Am I right?
Yes.

- How is the 15MM ADAPTOR used? I guess I need 2 of them to use 15mm rods..??
Maybe someone can answer this whose used it?

- Have I missed any must-have parts?
CF card

Thanks for reading..
Thanks for writing and telling where you're at..

Hi,

the Quickplate is a nice sleek alternative to the bulky Cradle. If you shoot CF cards only (as I do) you want one.

BTW: You know that many, many user got dropped frames with the REDraid. Personally I find a HD system far from secure (how many HD died in Laptop). I use CF cards only, never got a dopped frame (if you don't exeed the fps capability of the CF).

Hans, thanks for the heads-up..
Maybe I should reconsider getting more CF cards instead of 3 HDDs.

If you use CF cards you want a Nexto 2525 for secure backup on set. Also you need at least 10 CF cards fo one day shooting. We never erase CF cards on set. They get erased only when all footage is dumped on LTO3.

I'm learning about Nexto right now... Seems nice..
What kind of CF do you use? IMO, Sandisk is a very secure and good chocie..

You are correct about the handle, you only need to add the left one. The 15mm adapter lets you mount 15mm rods at 60mm centered spacing to 19mm rods at 104mm centered spacing on the front of the camera. You should only need one 15mm adapter unless you will be putting a lot of weight on those 15mm rods. But if it's just to support a matte box and follow focus, then one adapter should do the trick. You will need a universal mount to use the 15mm adapter. I would suggest getting at least a couple of universal mounts because you use them for all types of things, mounting the 15mm adapter, quickplate, cradle, etc. If you're confused about the rods and spacing check out Brooks awesome Rod FAQ here.

Hans, I'm debating this right now, as I've got 5 cards. Never liked the firestore option on the hvx. Although the redraid for steadicam shots etcetera is great, I'm concerned about the seemingly limited mobility of the drive. How many cards do you shoot with? What kind of productions are you working on?
EDIT: you answered the how many cards question....i gather your not shooting documentary stuff at all...

Hi Onur,

I don't know your kinds of production but if you shoot talking heads for a documentary the REDRaid seems to be the only reasonable way.

For every thing else where you need the camera working flawlessly you must shoot on CF. They are 8GB now (4min. 4K) which is pretty the same a one mag 35mm (120m). I don't find the short runtime destracting since I'm use to this 4 minute frame anyway but 16 GB CF Cards will be nice.

IMHO keep one REDRaid an buy 20 CF cards. Dropped frames are a plague, I for myself would hate it.

Hans

The RedRaid is great. But it really depends on what and how you shoot. You will only get dropped frames on it if you are rough with the camera during shots. That is to say the camera has to shake a good amount in order to drop frames. If you are shooting on a tripod, then there should be no problem. We have yet to experience a dropped frame going to the drives. Also keep in mind that if you need a shot that is longer then 4+ minutes, you need the drive. If you are doing high frame rate shots you need the drive to shoot 120fps at 2k, the CF cards can only do 113fps, and if you want to ensure no dropped frames going to CF then at the moment you need to shoot 110fps. It really depends on what and how you shoot. We use both depending on the situation. If you can afford a drive, then I would at least get one. It will give you the most flexibility.

Evolve,

I'm doing commercials but also randomly documentaries. I never shoot endless talking heads stuff. Yes, 4 minutes 4K for a documentary is a very short runtime.

Most shots in my docu-work are 3K because we use my trusty S16 Canon 8-64 for this kind of work. I love handheld camerawork and don't want to trade security for runtime. BTW 3K is just about 8 min. which I found not distracting at all.

I must say that I never was a fan of the endless runtimes of tapes. This brought down discipline and transformed a former hunter into a collector. Shorter runtimes create better films, IMHO.
