Hello everyone,

So I finally was able to have some fun with that battle tested mx I purchased months ago.
Sold my gh2 and stepped up to the mx. What an upgrade!

I shot this first daylight test with no reflector nor light modifier, sunlight only.
Wanted to see what was possible with a much better camera sensor than what I had previously.

I must say I am very impressed in terms of dynamic range and colors.

I was suprised at the amount of noise though, considering everything was shot at the 800 iso base.
The noise is only visible on my ultrasharp dell display though, unnoticeable when I watched it on my hd tv.
I did not denoise btw.

Here are a couple of 1080p screengrabs before the vimeo compression:

Here is the video: looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
thanks for watching

Looks Good Karim:thumbup1:, I got mine in February this year, I love it.

Ohw.... Grade

Ohw.... Grade

"ohw" ? what do you mean?

I am very interested in constructive critiscim on anything from camera angles, composition, light, grade etc...

No need to sugar coat anything I am new to this and eager to learn.
Very interested in critiques.

Started this thread to share my journey and learn from the process

Ah I see sorry never heard that acronym before!
Many thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

Always interested in critiques of course!

Anybody interested to connect hit me up on vimeo I will be happy to follow back.
Best way I know of to keep in touch with cinematographer and keep up to date with their work

Lovely images, that's what happens when you put MX in the right hands, hehe. Since Red cameras don't perform any denoise in-camera, something like Neat video pass with the right settings might do the job.

thanks!
yes I bought this plug in and it has done wonders for my gh2 footage.
As for now for my red footage, the noise is unnoticeable on an hdtv.
Might be on a cinema screen but so far I did not need to use it.

which lenses is this shot with??!

I too am about to get the Chance to test my Battle Tested this week.... I'm excited yet at the same time nervous (slightly), i feel the nervousness comes from so many failed attempts at trying to get my 60D to mimic that of a film camera lol

which shot? I installed the optitek nikon pro lock mount so all my lenses will always be nikon lenses.
On the boat clip, 70-200 for the guy scenes, 105 macro for the spider web.
For the snail shots, 105 macro.

You will love the mx.
In my opinion, the number 1 factor to get the so called film look is dynamic range. It is the most noticeable difference between videoish dslr footage and cinema camera footage.
And the reason why you can get close to film look with dslr footage on low contrast shots but not on shots that require a hdr.

I am happy with how the guy/boat scenes turned out and in these conditions (direct sunlight) dslr would have failed because of their weaker dr.

The issue is you need to have the histogram to take full advantage of the high dr.
And most monitors don't display it and the ones that do are quite expensive.

Ha ha Ha Ok Ok Ok thank you Karim Nassar. i'm always following your Vimeo...

Hi Dearest Karim, I really love your videos, just for information did you get about how the Red One as well as or did you buy, thank you.

what's your grading technique/workflow? any filtration used?

My workflow is not what I want it to be at the moment simply because my computer is equipped with a radeon 7970.
It is a good card but da vinci resolve only runs on nvidia on windows. No idea why.
I will get the titan based on the recommendation of this board as soon as I have the money.
So so far I graded in red cine x but I plan to work with resolve in the future.
I have a creative cloud subscription for the rest.

Yes I did use filtration, nd filter. The brand I used is b+w.
Before that one I purchased a tiffen one which I returned because of a strong color cast.
I am happy with the b+w but it is expensive.

Ha ha Ha Ok Ok Ok thank you Karim Nassar. i'm always following your Vimeo...

followed back. You need to upload more than one video ;-)
looking forward to new works from you

Seriously nice. Makes me want a macro lens. Beautiful colours. What lens are you using.

nikon 105 macro
I like the colors too thanks, but it has more to do with the pretty flower, the good lens, and the redcolor science more than it has to do with me haha
