  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My Octacopter rig.

Hi guys. Here is my latest rc-camera-heli. It's a continuing on the X8-coaxial motor mounting that I have drived for last few years. This is by far the largest and strongest drone, but also the lightest. Almost entire in carbon fiber and using the Dragon Carbon with a Voigtländer 20mm lens. This heli can fly easy for 30 min with this camera and probably 10-15 min with 2 dragons for 3D. This drone is made to be very safe. It flies like a feather and is very rigid.. but on the other side it is very fragile and will break immediately if it collides with anything (car, window, other aircraft etc..)

Nothing is custom made, just standard low-cost-chine-stuff put together for reality, endurance, and performance.
Motors are U8 with 28-inch props. Flight controller is DJI Wookong. Gimbal is variation on Famous hobby with 32bit Alexmos gimbal controller. Flight battery are 3x10Ah 6 cell LiPo and can carry up to 3x20Ah for flying time over hour. ESC are mounted between motors for optimal cooling. They are flashed with simonk mr-firmware and is extremely optimized for multirotors.

What I have learn driving drones with Dragons in cold-stormy winter conditions is that you have to over kill a lot. The battery for camera and gimbal is same volt (4s) and very large so camera can be powered on while the drone is on ground waiting for director. This is to make temp and -blackshading constant.

Not mounted here is the Lightbridge and Foolcontrol link that uses a serial 433Mhz serial-extension from cam-op to the normal Of-Hollywood wifi bridge. This is not to interfere with the Futaba 2.4Ghz receiver on heli. Here is just an analog 5.8Ghz video link mounted for maximum range.

Total cost was about $9000 and 200h build time. It folds together and fits in any passenger car.
Compared to the DJI Inspire it's a slow fat-ugly lady, but here you have a real camera ;) and customization options.

First off, love the picts.
Q1: Why are you using an analog video link (and what is it?) Is it better range?
Q2: If you're using the Lightbridge for FPV + OSD, why not use HDMI video?
