  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My Octacopter rig.

what lenses are you guys using? Optimal Focal Lengths?

lenses? Anyone?

I really love the first clip you have linked here. It's beautiful. You've achieved something at (relatively) low cost that I would expect to see in a higher budgeted movie. Nice.

Cool, thank you :)
I love flying this copters. There is something magic thinking the camera move and then se it come to life in reality.

Just built a new octacopter with brushless gimbal for my Epic camera, an X8-960 with takeof weight of 26lbs and flyght time of 12,5 min. Cost just under $4000 including alexmos gimbal and 10x 9Ah 6s lipo.

Here is a flight from yesterday where I went very hi and far.
Epic "Folke" with Tokina 11-16 shooting 5K WS in 50fps.

Wait a minute...

are you telling me that you built that thing for less than 4k?

As in ready to fly for less than 4k?

Yes, the kit I bring with me is about $4k + Epic & lens. I had to test different motors so they worked with weight and where efficeient. Totally I bought stuff for about 10k but it was a bit trial and error.

Nice job. X-8 is the way to go. Looks a lot like mine ;-)

Nick

I love flying the X8 :) Very smooth and stable.. and you can have it smaller and still have large props. This one is just 960mm motor-to-motor and uses 17 inch blandes.

Well you have to count in all the time you spend doing research and assembling it.

But otherwise, it's possible. Check out FamousHobby... they are building high quality gimbals and copters.

As to price, yeah, a frame should be around $300-500, FC about $1200, motors, 8x $100-150 The gimbal is going to be one of the most expensive single purchases, but you can build a brushless gimbal that would handle an epic for about $2k, less if you wanted to do more work your self. But you have to know the hows and whys of everything which take a bit of a time investment ;-)

You have my respect sir. :)

I have to come by you next time I'm back in good old Sweden. Actually, I'll be back in Sthlm beginning next month, if you have the time, I would love to pick your brain and perhaps get a demonstration. ;)

I've been looking into buying a ready-to-fly. Any tips on whom I should check out for the best best machine and best bang for the buck?

Edit: I should add that I'm looking to buy 2-3 machines and they will be used in various locations so the easier to travel, the better. Anyone that has good tips are of course welcome to answer. :)

Thanks for the tips David. :)

I agree with you, there is a time investment behind building your own that has to be counted in as well.
