Thanks to Ketch and Gibby, I have an opportunity to shoot on Epic M #8 for a couple of days. On this thread I will share my thoughts about the camera, once I have had a chance to digest everything. I can only talk in generalities, and cannot address any questions about menu functions, technical details, etc.

My first impression is that the camera represents some kind of huge leap in technology. I reminds me of when I tossed out my old $99 Verizon flip phone in 2006 and finally got an iPhone 3Gs. The leap in technology almost made it seem to me like the iPhone was alien technology. I had the same kind of reaction to Epic.

Thanks again, Ketch, Gibby, Jarred and Red.

More to come.

Thanks for posting Tom,..What is the weight of the Epic as you have it configured for your stills?

I can't talk about any technical details or specs, only my impressions of the camera as a cinematographer.

Tom did you find you were using more like your 5d or your Red in terms of style and flexibilty, and how did that impact how you shot?

Much more like the Red MX. However, the bootup time is so fast. This morning I hit the Power button, bent down briefly to retie one my shoelaces on my boots, and by the time I popped up, the camera was on and running, with an image on the LCD. :w00t:

Hopefully tomorrow we will get a chance to try to the Epic M on a dual KS8 ATM gyro rig. We are going to see how light we can get this camera with Zeiss Standars and a battery belt. :)

It seems that long exposures are being polished and not yet enabled on Epic-M. What was the longest shutter available?

Can't wait to see what you do with some HDRx, long exposure, high ISO, with light on the foreground and the Milky Way perfectly exposed. And those dolly and crane moves!

I think they are still working on the timelapse functions.

I did shoot a pretty decent HDRx test with the snow, desert, clouds and moon. I'm just waiting on a Windows version of 416ER with HDRx support. I'm dying to see how this came out. :)

I believe there is also a new and much better software method for blending HDRx coming quite soon. So I might wait for that. What's worth doing is worth doing right.

Tom, this is awesome. Thanks for doing this. Seems like this is the perfect camera for your remote location shoots, timelapse, stuff like that. No more hauling around a hulking R1. I can't wait to feel the camera in my hands. The possibilities seem endless.

Off topic, could you tell me about your slider that you're using in the photo? Thanks!

Well, the camera has come and gone. Ketch has about a gazillion people, including huge productions, calling and emailing him off the hook. I was blessed just to get 24 hours with the camera. Thanks again to Ketch, Gibby and Jarred. I was hoping to get some amazing shots, but alas, the weather let us down on both major shots. Can't win 'em all.

My time with Epic M was like meeting a super-hot girl on a short vacation: it's amazing while it lasts, then she's gone.

I should also add that the Epic M performed 100% flawlessly. Not a single crash, freeze-up, hiccup... nothing. 100% stable. And that's more than I can say even for my Red MX, which has codec errors and faults from time to time.

Jonathan, that is a Cinevate Atlas 200.

Tom,

thanks for the kind words, it was a true Pleasure to come and play with you for the weekend, wish I could have staid longer,
but as you said...So much happening now that I had to go!!

I promise wil play again soon ;)

You can go ahed and post some of the HDRx shots here if if you like, I will be sending the Footage we shot to Hollywood DI
for editing and grading at my pleasure, so please fill absolutely free to do the same, and this will give people to see the
same footage under two different view from each of us ;)

Look forward to see them...

I am sooo happy that you got to play with the Epic M Tom, if ever there was someone on the boards deserving an early test run to put the camera through it's paces out in the wilds it was you :)

Was there any wildlife around that you could shoot some 96FPS shots of?

And Ketch's warmth and generous spirit is great to watch as always :)

Eren, we shot a lot birds, including Great Egrets, at Salton sea, at 96fps. We used a Red 300mm prime, and the footage looks ridiculously sharp and detailed. At 96fps, the motion of the birds is gorgeous. The best shot I got of that was HDRx, so I'm still working on processing those.

Tom... if you have any questions or want some inside scoop on HDRx, shoot me an email.

That one photo pretty much sums up how fast things are moving now with Red.
