Excited about this year's TIFF. Are there any 'must see' films for lovers and students of great cinematography? I know Terence Malick has a new film, but don't have tickets to it.
Other suggestions?

We've jut finished grading a visually stunning movie called THE TIME BEING shot by a very talented young DP, Mihai Maliamare, Jr., that will premier at TIFF ... (Mihai also just shot THE MASTER on 70mm film!) ... the story may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're interested in the art and craft of lighting, composition and exposure this is a dream of a movie.

As well as revealing the inner workings and visual imagination of a tormented artist, there's some stunning shots of the sea and the natural landscape ... there's one long continuous steadi-cam shot (lasts over two minutes - with no cuts) where Mihai starts outside the front of a house and walks slowly all the way through to the back of the house adjusting exposure as he goes ... out of the back door and through the garden (a bird flies into the frame exactly on cue - no kidding) and then into the artist's room in the studio at the back and into his current painting ... man oh man, if I didn't know it was continuous I would have sworn it was several takes.

There's also an incredible CU shot of the artist's eye with a reflection of a clock clearly seen in the iris ... VFX, I hear you say? ... nope .. practical shot ... if you play the scene in slo-mo you see the hands of the clock ticking backwards .. unreal!

Anyway, check out THE TIME BENG at Toronto and let me know what you make of the cinematography ... our colorist, Aaron did a great job in working with Mihai to bring out the subtlety of the colors and fine gradations of lighting from the digital files ... it's projects like this when you really understand the creative synergy that a talented DP and Colorist bring to the table.

Good luck getting tickets to anything now...looks like I'm going to have to fork out a bit of dough to see anything this year. Crazy markups and these aren't even the parties!
