Hi everyone

I'm posting this showreel for a DP friend of mine, Antoine Carpentier
He has edited a new showreel with his latest work and he's anxious to get some feedback about it.
btw, if you need a DP in France, or everywhere else... :)

Feel free to leave comments here or on Youtube. His website is still under constuction though...

How much of this was shot on RED?

Jim

All of it except for one shot was done on Red #3743, with the original sensor.
The one shot has been made with an HVX+M2 (The two suited guys
getting out of a building through a transparent door)

Most (1/2) of the showreel was done with my Lomo Highspeed (a bit soft, less contrast, with
aberration and diffusion, warm)
, then (1/3) RPP (sharp and high contrast, cold).
Some shots with Angenieux Optimo's (sharp, medium contrast, neutral color)

Nice to see the Red Leader got the first post :)
hope you liked what you saw and you're not asking
because it's doesn't fit your quality standard... :/

yes, when you need an ugly cinematic bridge... it's the one. I like the natural lights in here, plus the dp light, it's nice. And we are from Paris obviously :)

About that, I've seen the thread about showreel theft and all of this.

This is Antoine Carpentier showreel, but I've been his AC for the second year on every of his projects and these showreel shots (except the 3 year's old shot in HVX+m35). So I guess it's ok I post this for him, with my personnal account... ?

I'm dying to see he choose two shots where I was soft in the bathroom. :001_rolleyes:

At first I assumed that none of this was shot on Red, actually. May just be the way its lit/graded, though.

Lit like you would light film, just exposing a bit higher to get some latitude in post, RED can look incredible. Even with the M sensor. We know that, but it is always cool to see.

Thanks for him.

exactly, but I have better

Light and contrast the scene within the limitations of the camera/film you've got, and you will achieve any look you want.

-mode rant on-
I shoot with other DPs as well, and some said to me :well, it's noisy when it's underexposed ? yes but I won't change my light. Not my problem if Red can't be like film.

But the guys generally worked film only at school like me... so I hated that kind of thoughts. Especially one guy who choose Red, and took two days a prelight to handle the exposure to its best... and does not do what he has learned, DP has to adapt to their support if they want a good image.
-mode rant off-

Red created every tools to help DP to expose nicely, but most here in France don't care.
Antoine is very carefull with contrast, and when is not, I remind him to be so we can have the data in post.

Of course, it's much much much harder with an hvx than a Red. That's what I love with Red. It's a bit bigheaded, I know : we work the same as usual, but now it can be really nice. Thanks JJ.

It would help if one could make display-LUTs, like one will be able to with Epic...

I have a hard time convincing DPs to expose differently, and frankly, I suggest it, but feel no need to go into a quarrel over it...

But it IS lovely to see the results!

Even after 3 years here, I'm still impressed, when I post a new thread with footage, there are more than 1000 viewers and... on the 1st french forum, there are 20...

Thanks for that everyone.
