Hey Guys,

So a year ago when I started shooting for Muse on RED cameras I mentioned the future was 4K. Matt Bellamy the lead singer is a tech nerd as well so this began his interest. When he saw the footage we shot in 4K he was blown away. Three months later he did some research and found out that no one else was shooting concerts in 4K for a 4K release. He wanted to be the first.

Bellamy told Billboard: "We filmed it with 4K cameras. It’s four times more high definition than HD. It will be the first concert film ever released in that level of high definition. We are going to go to a bunch of theatres around the world so people can see it in this ultra high definition called 4K. Unfortunately the DVD can’t do that but in terms of theatres it will be the highest definition concert ever filmed."

Unfortunately, Sony sponsored the whole thing and sent over tons of F55's free of charge. Until then it was going to be an Epic shoot. Anyways, just thought you might enjoy checking this out and reading some of the details about the shoot. 4K video releases are coming quickly and I'm sure others will follow Muse's lead and release 4K concert films.

Check it out in a 4K theater near you!

That's really cool and a great use of technology. If it comes in 4K to a theater nearby, I'll be sure to check it out.

You can check to see if the film is coming to your area here. I'll add this to the original post as well.

Very cool. I think live shows are a perfect avenue for 4K. Both larger shows and smaller ones.

I agree. I feel like it adds a whole other dimension to live shows that you used to only get in person at the venue. Especially when they are in surround sound and UHD!

I believe Steve Gibby shot a 4K concert for Green Day a few years ago...

Whatever the case, congrats on this. Looks like a lot of fun.

Yeah we know about the Green Day shoot, but that wasn't a 4K release. That's why I made sure to say first 4K release. Definitely isn't the first 4K shot concert because Jeff Cronenweth has shot at least 2 concerts with Epics recently (Mariah Carey & Rage Against the Machine). This is just the first ever 4K release of a concert film. The Green Day concert info is some of the info I sent to Matt on shooting 4K and the coming wave of 4k content.

Some the only content in the early days of hd tv was concerts. So this continues the tradition I guess for when palladium starts broadcasting in uhd. Muse will be ready.

Heh. I was up late watching some of that as well. Loved it. I really dug shooting Coachella in 4K this year and the artists and festival responded nicely to that.

That was me. 11 Red Ones, May of 2009. Pre-MX. I was DP and director.

I provided flat 4K DPXs of one song to Red for the 2009 NAB showreel, and they conformed it back together. That was the only 4K conform done of the material, just one song's worth.

The otherwise 1080 deliverables aired on Comcast (and some on-demand Comcast), and later made it's way to Swiss tv of some sort.

Incidentally, Green Day and Muse are both on Warner Bros. Devin Sarno @Warner could have chimed in on it too, but he wasn't privy to a lot of the 4K details, as they had no use for it at the time.

I have all the .r3ds on a couple drives still, 2.8TB worth in Redcode 28.

Maybe it should be resurrected!

Well... don't forget U2's Imax concert film from about ten years ago, which I would argue has more than 4K resolution. Anybody know what the Metallica Through the Never film was shot on? My guess is that it was not 4K, though it is 3D and released in Imax. (My guess is Alexa, but details are nil on IMDB.)

Congratulations Matt!!!

Thanks Nick!

I would argue the U2 film was not a 4K finish and will never be released in digital 4K. As for Metallica I believe it was Alexa. So in theory this is the first 4K UHD delivery, film not counting. Talking strictly digital release here.

Looking forward to seeing anything at that res :)

Back to pre-video analog film days, great majority of live concert films at the time were shot on 16mm, afaik. Even though quality wasn't constantly great, I guess you could get something close to 1080/2K out of the stock (with post sharpening) if it's in decent condition. I've seen some of re-scanned concert films in 1080p, it's grainy, but still cool as hell. I don't know if they used 35mm for concert gigs back then much, especially for the whole show, so I can't comment on that. Anyway, even though I prefer to watch such things at home, I like the idea of live concert shot in high-res, projected and displayed in 4K / UHD. Also worth nothing to show it in cinemas, since with digital projection you don't need to print copies anymore.

Very nice indeed Matt!!

And yeah, leave to the powers at Sony, to just trow in a bunch of FREE cameras to push them forward ahed of much more advanced and way better cameras...

They could give them away to me as well, but I would still PAY... Oh... Wait... I did Pay... So that I can use my own RED EPIC "D R A G O N" thanks... ;)
