  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Seriously, I'm barely grabbing 24Mbps down and 2Mbps UP! Vimeo uploads are the bane of my existence currently...
Can't wait until Google Fiber comes to the OC.

Must be nice to have a connection that's bottlenecked by... the internet haha.

...Meanwhile, only 18 miles south of you, I'm paying $70/month for 15 down and 0.8 up.

But I have to wonder what sorts of real speeds are you getting. I can rarely break 7Mbs downstream speeds as most places throttle back their individual connection rates. I just wish I could get some better upload speed here because this is just downright painful and our upstream speed has been this slow for the past decade here and no options to upgrade it or buy anything different.

Well so far "gigabit" does mean 750ish down and almost 800 up. Uploading t YouTube, etc., is just plain spooky! But... we were pretty early on the install deployment and it will be interesting to see if it changes as more customers are set up. However, since most consumers are using wireless that limits them to 150 or so, maybe us hardwired guys will still get primo speed.

... and I'm not spending $70 a month ;-)

I live just outside Boston and I feel pretty lucky that we have Fios, and I get 100 Mbps up and down...which ain't Google speeds but it is a lot better than my sister's farm in Indiana, where they call 1 Mbps down broadband......

While we're on the subject, I actually did some investigating on my current speeds (Time Warner). I ran a speed test and was getting 25Mbps down, 2Mbps up. Compared that with my internet plan and I was short by a whopping 50%! Called up TWC, they said my modem was old and didn't support the newer/faster speeds of the plan.

Not wanting to deal with the likely second-hand modem they would ship me days later, I got a Motorola modem shipped same-day with Amazon. Plugged it in, registered with TWC and what do you know... 50Mbps down, 6Mbps up. I'll take a 2x increase any day.

So basically my PSA would be to check your modem if you're less than thrilled with your speeds. It's worth a verification!
 
Yes I had a similar issue with Qwest/CenturyLink and updated my modem with good results. Don't just take what they give you!!!
 
always been curious about this... so what if you are not so lucky with speeds and want to be a full time internet video content producer? How do people upload massive amounts of video to services like vimeo and youtube when needed? (thinking about the daily content type shows but from work from home producers)

A good tip for CenturyLink customers is to NOT use their DNS servers! Their DNS is painfully slow and often down or out of date, causing routing issues and delays. I use the Google DNS addresses.

Feel free to supply your own DSL modem too. Don't ever rent/lease one from them. You'll pay for it 10X over doing that. You can buy up front, but they're typically using older models and may even give you a refurbished unit for new price. It's horrible. Not always a fan of the models they offer, either. Even when you know you can get a brand new unit.
 
Fiber to the house here. $80/month. 1 Gig down, 250Mb up. Anything less seems uncivilized.
