Mounting scarlet on a tripod

Hi guys,

I still have not seen any pictures of the bottom side of the Scarlet. So, I have a quick question. Is it possible to mount Scarlet directly on the tripod head (be it Sachtler FSB 8 that I own or any other that I might use at work)? That is without using any kind of dovetails, adapters, etc. I don't need any rods... just put Scarlet body on a tripod head. Is that possible? What screw holes does the Scarlet bottom have?

Hi Kamilla, this is to be confirmed by a RED REP but my thought is yes, from what I understand it has the standard Camera Stud/socket for tripods....while I was posting, Phil answered perfectly...what he said.

I find it interesting that it doesn't have a space to accommodate the little post which ensures the camera is mounted in the correct direction and helps reduce the possibility of it rotating around the thread on lower end tripods.

By mounting with 1x 1/4-20 and 1x 3/8-16 or 2x 3/8-16 you get accurate registration and is much more secure. Same idea, but you are just using another bolt as the registration pin.

You can do this with the most basic Manfrotto video baseplates on the market.

How do you do that, Phil? Do you need to buy different bolts to add into your baseplate? Or converter bushings for the camera like this?

Most, I might even say all, professional tripod plates come with two screws to bolt the plate to the camera. They are often two different sizes to accommodate different mounts. You can use both screws under the Scarlet/Epic to secure the plate from spinning. See this one.

You can use the stock screws and use them both in the 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 threads. The spring loaded registration pin will just push down.

Or if you're feeling a bit handy, what I do is drill another hole forward on the plate to use 2 3/8-16 bolts. The Manfrotto plates are just aluminum and easy to bore out.

When I got home I took a look at my tripod (which has a Libec H38 head on it) and it turns out that screwed into the top of the head under the plate there is an extra 3/8-16 bolt which can be removed and added to the channel with the 1/4-20 bolt and mounting pin. Perfect!
