Motion Control for Dana Dolly + eMotimo ST4

Hey, Brian Burling, eMotimo founder here. Lots of questions and great responses. We are excited about this thread. We will check in on Tuesday (a week after this post was put up) about the group buy, but it looks like there is some strong interest.

Let me respond to a few comments/Questions:

Hi, It's Mike from the Dana Dolly. We're in if anyone needs the combo: Dana Dolly + EMotimo. I don't post or follow Reduser much, so Brian from eMotimo would probably be the best to head that up. Brian and Phil Holland are two of the best people you'll ever meet.

Thanks Mike, very nice of you to say. Feeling is mutual and your industry stories are amazing (chat him up at NAB, Mike has secrets). Since last NAB, it's been exciting to bring this project to life with you. Combining eMotimo with Dana Dolly opens up a ton of possibility for our customers. Getting Phil's experience in there too has helped to validate that we are still heading down the right track! Thanks!

Hi Brian,

Hot Rod Camera did a demo for me and I was super impressed!!! I don't own a Dana Dolly... any plans to adapt eMotimo to other sliders? Particularly MYT Works?
Thanks
-JB
Glad they gave you a good demo - really cool new shop they have! Integration to other's sliders? You bet, but we wanted to focus on Dana Dolly first. We like they guys at MYT Works and think they make a sweet slider too. See the next response too.

Is it possible to connect to a kessler cineslider?
Regards
Yes, works now and has for a long time. In fact, in our original product video, Danny Brown did quite a bit of work on them. https://vimeo.com/160755974 around 1:30. In fact we integrate to lots of companies like Dynamic Perceptions, Rhino Camera Gear, iFootage, and Kessler. Some like it and help cross promote it, some don't as they like to sell their own moco heads. We try to keep our customer's best interests in mind and keep the cost of ownership low without locking them into a brand.

Why Dana Dolly though? It is smooth quiet and supports our maximum payload easily. We tuned our motors / size and drivetrain to give us a very usable range of speeds with nearly no motor noise at the most interview speeds. While other integrations are lighter, none have the capacity and balance of speed / quiet, and run length that we have been able to hit with the Dana Dolly. If you need to go light and super portable there are other solutions. If you want a long run with big cameras, this integration with DD is very good.

Is there anybody that done a comparison to between the eMotimo ST4 and the Kessler CINEDRIVE?
Im aslo interested to know if there is any comparisons between the Dana Dolly and Kessler SHUTTLE DOLLY.
I will likely add my opinions later, but not in this post as it requires some tact. Comparing our 4-axis solution that costs about $5K all in, to one that costs about $14-15K** is going to ruffle some feathers. In general we think asking the following questions is really important:

1. What do I want to shoot with Motion Control and why? Interviews, tabletop product shooting, VFX, timelapse, stop motion, high speed?
2. How usable is it for that function?
3. Does it give me the results I am looking for?
4. Will it support the cameras I shoot with now/future?
5. Does it fit into my existing kit and other solutions?
6. Will it grow with me?
7. What is the total cost of ownership? How much can I make with it?

Question: Can the emotimo export out camera data that can be imported into C4D?
eMotimo can export camera move data for all 4-axis through our API to a text file. This file can be massaged pretty easily in excel or with scripts if you have the knowledge of the destination format. Long term, utilizing the micro sd card for this makes sense.

I have a few quick questions :)

Is it possible to save your programmed moves and then reload them into the system on another day? Is it possible to export the data of the programmed move you have conducted to an SD Card or similar and then reload it onto the system? Also how many programmed moves can the system have stored 'on it' at any one time? Can they be named?
Thank you very much :) Looks like an extremely exciting product!
Not currently on just the onboard computer. We always had this in mind with the microSD card and see the value in it, but we want to ensure we have a clean, well understood workflow. Making mistakes and reloading a 10 foot move on a 6 foot track is exciting in all the wrong ways. Keep track of us in the next couple weeks as we are working on something that we think will be good around this concept.

This kit would be possible to connect to any kind of slider, only it would be more of a hassle to mount it right?
Asking since I have an old multi-glider which has a nice counterweight feature allowing vertical sliding that I think would be perfect to have motion controlled.
I'm also wondering about the possibility of using to fz and the slider-movement at the same time, that would be great..
(Might as well ask emotimo direct and return here when I know)
Interested in a gb if eu-shipment is possible.

Well sort of. Getting an easy-to-set up kit is really important to us. Belt tension, alignment, clean mounting, support . . . all of it matters and some of it is surprisingly hard to get right. The kit can be modified, but depending on your skill, results will vary.

As far as using Fz with slider . . yes and encouraged. The power of the spectrum is easily programming your pan/tilt/slide/focus for 2-9 onboard keframes QUICKLY to get natural looking moves that keep the subject framed and and sharp. I think we tackle complex interview setups (where you might need Pan/Tilt/Slide/Fz) very well and get great results without spending a long time setting it up.

Thanks for the questions and considering our gear. We are excited to check in early next week and show what's next.

Best regards and happy Friday,

Thanks very much for your answer Brian!

Excited to hear what the group buy options end up being. The ability to save moves for later re-loading is quite central to one of the functions we'd hope to use the system for. Very excited to hear if any solution does end up appearing for this use-case :)

Realized now that I mistyped. The question was if you're able to use two fz-motors and a sliding motor at the same time, wondering since I could only find two outputs for fz-motors and slider movement (I.e. zoom, focus and dolly simultaneously)

Matt, not a problem, please email me with what you'd like, and I'll respond with a discount code you can use. Mike at Danadolly dot com. Thanks.

+1 on the group buy. I have and use the Dana dolly frequently, it’s a great piece of kit. One question while Mike is here or to others who may have encountered this, on longer lenses, you can feel a bit of a rocking with the dana dolly when mounted to stands. This comes from slight play in the stands to jr pin on the dolly brackets or the stands flexing. Has anyone come up with a solution to this? Even the center support mounts in the middle with a baby pin so still rocks side to side. I was thinking of using two monopods with a semi circular bracket under each rail so it could be quickly supported on each side.

Hi Peter,
The spectrum is a 4 -axis system with Pan and Tilt being internally wired so we have two external motor ports that you can configure as you like. Options are typically:

1) Pan/Tilt/Slide/Focus
2) Pan/Tilt/Zoom/Focus
3) Pan/Tilt/Cart/Focus - motorized 3 wheel cart we have had on the market for about 3 years - emotimo.com/cart
4) Pan/Tilt/Turntable/Focus - emotimo.com/turntable (currently sold out as we revamp design)

With the Pan/Tilt channels being internally wired, we can't Tilt/Slider/Focus/Zoom or Pan/Iris/Zoom/Focus. We chose to keep the pan, tilt, brain (controller) integrated to avoid having to wire these axis for every shoot.

Best regards,
Brian

... Has anyone come up with a solution to this? ...

I am using Kesslers Kwik Rail Leg Clamps for this very reason, plus its so fast and flexible. http://store.kesslercrane.com/shuttle-dolly-adjustable-kwik-rail-leg-brackets-set-of-4.html

But be warned: The rail Dana Dolly recommends is Extruded schedule 80 aluminum pipe 6061 - T6 which has an outer diameter of 1.66". The openings of the Kessler Kwik Rail Leg Clamps accept 1.635" and 1.652" diameter rail. :( I had to bring them to a machine shop and have them routed out a bit.

Chatted with Mike from Dana Dolly and Phil Holland today.

We are go for a GB!

We will work out the details over the next couple days. Phil should be putting this up early next week!

Thank you for your interest and questions. Keep them coming!

Hello Brian, when your refer to focus, does the emotimo come with its focus motor in the bundle or it has to be integrated with a 3rd party motor?
Great on the GB

Related question to the above focus motor question -- How does emotimo handle hard stops on lenses? Will it automatically stop if the operator hits the hard stop, or if the operators makes a mistake, will the motor / lens potentially be damaged? (something I've always wondered about on these moco solutions)

Hi Philip Lanyon,
I know what you mean about the long lenses. We addressed this somewhat when we partnered with American Grip and made the Dana Dolly stand. It has a cradle now that additionally supports the track ends. Long lenses are always a challenge, even for big dollies, and we're working on a solution that I hope we'll have by NAB if you'll please come by and give us your thoughts.
Also, I think our drag wheel will be ready. I've been working on the drag for the past two years off and on. It has to be something that is smooth, adjustable, yet can take weather and climate without sticking or getting too loose. Kind of like a fluid head drag system.
Thanks very much, if you haven't tried the American Grip Dana Dolly stands, they take a lot of that play out for long lenses, while still allowing the easy mobility - especially with their removable two-way locking wheel sets - that the DD system provides.
Thanks again,
Mike Hall

Abiodun,

The Dana Dolly Integration kit bundle does come with our own focus motor. It plugs into our 4th motor port to enable coordination with the other axis. You can see more information here. - https://emotimo.com/pages/fz.

Great questions, Ian.

1) We designed the Fz motor, and all our motors to slip under medium to heavy loads. We actually have the ability to power up and power down these motors based on software. So even if you crash into a hard stop lens damage is not likely.
2) You easily set up software stops (virtual stops) for the lens positions to enable you to freely focus through the controller without hitting hard stops. Once set, the controller is limited in how far the Fz will turn. This makes remote setup much easier where you are just looking at a monitor.

Best regards,
Brian
