  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am going to guess you used the spacebar preview on your MBP? For me, almost identical computer, I open the file in QT 7.6.6. I don't really use QT 10 because its missing certain controls and things. But when I look at the clip I don't see anything at all funky in the wood slots. Not in AE or FCP either, all looks good. VLC is jittery in the slots...

the ONLY funky thing I saw was in the red surface of the Gas Pump by the back left window. And that was after I color corrected the image, I think it just fell between my threshholds on my quick color pass. My fault.



GOD i love this image! In Michigan, land of the changing weather every 5 minutes, the sun can really get you! I saw the first post pic and said HOLY SHITAKE! Then the video clip, I am all by myself yelling at my screen as the guy walks in from outside, saying "No, he isn't gonna walk into the shadows, they're crazy! OH NO! HE DID IT! AWESOME!"

And Jim, I totally believe you about no lights, cause if this WAS light its the most impossibly nuanced and subtle lighting EVER. This is an AMAZING AMAZING feature!

When can I buy one? :-)

What really gets me is that you guys have done a better job with in camera HDR than any other camera builder, and this is a motion picture camera. It's weird what happens when people build things to their own specifications and have an actual desire to innovate.

I just simply can't wait, I want it so bad. This is mind blowing. Impossible. It's more MAGIC than anything else. It's almost impossible to not look at that image over and over again. I just can't believe that you did not only reach one of your goals, but it seems as if you reached everything.

How many times do you have to kill film and kick it when it's already down?

BTW... Graeme is tuning up the application that does this... should get better.

I cannot sleep now - not now not ever. WTF am I supposed to do? I think I'm gonna go invest in Ambien stock till the Epic comes in. I thought life was hard waiting for my RED to come back from MXing (still waiting...) now this?

Oh well, I'll sleep when I'm dead. Right now I can daydream about what kind of crazy films I am going to make with the Epic - with the added benefit of KNOWING that THOSE dreams can actually come true.

PS - HOLY SHIT! WOW! YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING (insert appropriately raunchy and salty platitudes here)

I've done this type of shot a hundred times with every type of media. Simply not possible.
I've had to defend latitude for film with HMIs/nets the works.
And you say its ungraded? No de-noise? Alpha testing/build? WOW!

While you can see some oddness in the fine grain of the wood (repeating grain patterns?) and the foreground table, the image as a whole is unbelievable.
Of course this could be web compression etc etc. I will stop pixel peeping.

This shot would be a strain on human vision. Your eyes would have to adjust for a couple of seconds (iris up/down) to see either in or out well.

I got retina burn last year shooting in Utah on the Salt flats. That desert sun is killer. This is staggering.
Its amazing to see his arms lit from the fill side by the wood as he climbs the stairs.
While its close to the basement in terms of IRE (old skule) they are still very much present.

Saw the still last night and motion this am. Even more amazed. Just want to point out a couple of things I'm sure a lot of folks have noticed, but haven't mentioned.

One: While the first thing you notice is the view outside, it's just as important (perhaps more in this shot) to see what's happened inside the barn. There is a very nice and natural filmic contrast. It's not flat. The normal and X-exposures are blended here too, and make the image more impressive. And it doesn't look like phony HDR (Apple iPhone, etc.)

Two: When the "talent" walks in from outside, imagine what your eye would do if it was following him. There would be some lag time while your iris adjusted from the bright background to the dark. But here the transition is seamless! What we're seeing is not "natural." It's more magic!

This is truly evolution enhanced by technology!

The possibilities that this opens up are so freeing. I would never have considered this kind of shot with any camera I have ever owned or used...and to think that I could have this kind of freedom with Scarlet is monumental.

The image and clip are impressive, but after watching them, I find that I need to go drink a Coca Cola. Can't quite put my finger on why...

It's as if Red just debuted color TV. Who wants to be stuck with a black and white set? Glad I'm a customer instead of a competitor.
 
Would love to have this for our 3D feature that goes to camera in 33 days, but I guess we'll just have to be happy with our good old R1 MX (or should I say x2)!
