The whole concept of DSMC is stills look as good as frames from motion and motion looks as good as stills. If they don't, then you don't have DSMC.

M-X is super-sweet, and you know I'm fussy :-)

Just so you know, we coined the acronym DSMC so we get to define what it means. It is a digital camera that shoots RAW stills and RAW motion. It is NOT a camera that shoot RAW stills and H.264 or AVCHD motion. So don't get confused.
:-)

Mods, please move this to the D7 thread :sarcasm:

Esquire is an ingenious place to demo the M-X for sure. All this needed for perfection was her walking Izzy

H.264 vs. REDCODE

H.264 vs. REDCODE

H.264 is for distribution, not acquisition!

Not just by a small amount, we did some filmout tests, the H.264 looked good in the graded stills, but was almost useless for motion, the compression is much worse than REDCODE artifacts, maybe more than many times as bad.

REDCODE looks quite good in 35mm prints, people should do tests and see for themselves, but from what I could see the combo of H.264 and Canon internal over processing makes for some gastly results if you grade the way you would 35mm negatives or to some extent RED ONE shots. I told my Brother that if I made it flatter and more washed out the H.264 and Canon processing noise would not look as noticeable, but he likes the print to have a hard a black as we can get and the highlights just buring out, so that option would not work for him. If you want to grade like film, and under-expose a little to hold the highlights then as far as I can see REDCODE holds up much better than H.264 for a recording format.

Its not a this or that issue, it is more night and day.

Canon seems to hide the H.264 atrifacts by making the playback files very flat and lacking in the sort of contrast you would want in a 4th generation release print. The lower the contrast and color the less the artifacts show up above the threshold of vision, but boost the S curve and make a wide range 35mm print the run it at projection speed and you see things, lots of artifacts like bugs all over the screen.

RED ONE is not without faults, my Bother does not like the vertical lines that look like fixed pattern noise that you can see more in a heavy S curve grade, both in the highlights and shadows. But at least that stands still, so it can seem like the screen is uneven, moving artifacts like those from H.264 are much worse I think...

Damn, Jannard. You really enjoy making us green with envy, don't you?

ohhh yeah....please say Megan Fox was into the EpicX (even if it's a lie) :-)

Congrats Jim, that's some pretty "epic" marketing right there.

Wooooot! This is freaking cool. I cant wait for the video. She is the sexiest woman alive... :drool5:

Jarred, did you get to stay there for the photo shoot?

Omg...she's incredible!

Oh well...stare and admire...no touchy...
On the other hand...the DSMC's...stare and admire now...touch later :P

Yup.. was a great time. Greg is one of those few at the top of his game, and It was inspiring to be able to work with him.
