Monkey Extract Questions

That is not documented with redline - I'll need to ask the Red guys.

Thanks Craig, I want to be sure with what I'm doing. I asked somewhere else about it but didn't get the answer.

Hi Guys,

I'm starting this thread to answer any questions you might have about Monkey Extract - specific workflows, color settings, render farm questions, and general Red advice.

The good folk from the forum also have the knowledge to help out, so feel free to ask questions here.

Thanks,
Hi Craig,

I am trying to use Monkey Extract 2.312 to render dpx image sequences from an Avid CMX 3600 EDL, it is finding the clips, but crashes every time it tries to start rendering.

I have had it working before, and I have just upgraded to 2.312 from 2.304 (in the hope that that would fix it, but it is exactly the same).

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Anna

Hi Anna,
This is very unusual.
Please send open the crash report and send it to support@rubbermonkey.co.nz and I'll take a look for you.

You may want to try reinstalling RedAlert as well (even if it already works fine). This has resolved similar issues in the past.

Thanks,
Craig

Hi Craig,

I tried reinstalling RedAlert, it is still the same. It then ocurred to me that maybe it's because I'm trying to run it on Mac OS X 10.4.11 with Red Alert v3.60. So I've moved it onto one of my other Macs that is running 10.5.7 and RedAlert v20.1.6 and it works perfectly.

Would this be the reason? (I will email crash report) If it is then I have to make a decision as to whether I upgrade my conform/online station to Leopard. As my other Mac was purchased for vfx work not conforming.

Thanks
Anna

I'm using the same OS and Redline version for development at the moment without any problems. This is the first time I've seen this problem. I'll get this fixed for you as soon as possible.

Hi,

New to this but I'm having the same problem too. Crash occuring under 10.4.11 using v3.60 when I try to render DPX files. Still only using the trial version as I'd like to be sure it's going to work before investing! I'm also reluctant to upgrade the OS as I'm in the middle of another (non RED) job.

Any thoughts on a solution?

Hi,

Craig at Rubber Monkey is working on a solution as we speak (well possibly he's sleeping right now). But hopefully he'll have a solution asap.

Thanks Anna

Bloody timezones eh.

:) I've been playing email tag every night before bed this week.

I've just uploaded a new version at www.rubbermonkeysoftware.com.
I think of spotted the bug in question. It wasn't breaking for everyone (or even me unfortunately) but it would definitely break for some just before rendering.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for your patience.

Thanks Craig, I'll check that out when I get a chance today.

Just got it working myself too. Just dropping by to say thanks!

Avid XML... how to?

Avid XML... how to?

We just can't get Avid based XMLs generated with FilmScribe to work for us. I checked your website for troubleshooting info and couldn't find anything. We're trying to go Avid > XML > Monkey Extract > Monkey XML and DPX > Inferno. I've tried selecting both Assemble and Optical and settings the global options to XML and Monkey Extract doesn't find any of the clips. What is the exact procedure for creating XMLs from FilmScribe.

Thanks,
Scott

From memory the post production guys keep everything at default + tick the "Opticals" box. If you don't tick Opticals then there are no actual file references in the XML for any of your effects. It took us a while to get this working as well.

If you are still having trouble matching after using these settings, please send your xml file and the monkeybase.dat from your R3D Source directory to support@rubbermonkey.co.nz. I'll take a look for you.

Cheers
Craig

You use the SCAM list XML to go to Monkey. FilmScribe does all the work of pulling selects from the timeline regardless of having VFX or not. Then that goes to Monkey.

Hi Nigel,
I'm using Monkey to pull RED plates for a VFX workflow.
Under Color & Gamma, Initial Settings, the options are "Camera Metadata" and "Default Values". What is the default setting using? Would that be the RAW capture?
Thanks,
Jenn

Hey guys,

I would also be interested in hearing the differences between the color space options in Monkey Extract. Is there a comprehensive list? Which of the options will give me the "flat pass" color treatment that I get when I export straight from RedCine without manipulating color at all? For that, do I need to do the "RedCine XML" option in Monkey Extract, or does one of the current options achieve the same look?

I have a lot of Red footage going to 3D artists, After Effect artists and now to a color-correction session (as DPX files) and would like to maintain the "flat pass" look.

Thank you. I apologize if this info is elsewhere. I've been looking.

Thanks for your help on that too (Niall & Anna).
...

Thought I'd let everyone know that I've posted a new alpha version of Monkey Extract. The core is the same as the 2.315 version, however I've multi-threaded the render loop, which basically means this should now render as fast as Red Rushes on a single box.

Also, The thumbnail generation now uses the r3d proxies (_p.mov) and redcode QT codec (if you have it installed). The result is MUCH faster thumbnails. Previously redline was generating these and was incredibly slow.

You can download this from my signature below (its not linked into our website yet). Please download it and give it a try & let me know if you have any problems. It's working well at my end :)

Our RedRocket has arrived now too, so we will be checking out that to ensure compatibility and see how fast it renders... just waiting for the Rocket compatible version of redline.

Cheers

I have a question regarding custom folder names. What's the equivalent of using --makeSubDir with redline?

I want to set the subfolder name to whatever the red file name is (without .RDC). Is this possible with ME?

I have a quick question, and I wonder if any has noticed this. We finally got a workflow figured out, and Monkey is a technical life saver, but I get a few clips here and there that have way more gamma and grain then what the .R3D shows.

If you look at the .R3D or the Dailies made in RedRushes, the gamma doesn't look anything like what is coming from Monkey. I am still trying to figure it out, if its metadata or rsx info, I have no idea, but I can't seem to debayer a few clips in Monkey without the Gamma Going like a factor of 2 and the grain exploding.

Anyone ever have an issue like that? I know I have seen it somewhere on these forums, but when I am extracting a whole timeline, only a few clips here and there exhibit this problem, not all of them.
