  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monitoring?

I believe power limitations make it impossible to have a cableless monitor like the DSMC2s.

I do wonder though if there is potential for a self-powered monitor that has a pogo/data mount specifically for the Komodo for cableless monitoring.

There is supposed to be a pogo cradle for smart phones, originally intended to support the pogo interface on the Hydrogen phones, thus cableless. Development on that ended with the end of the Hydrogen project.
It is being redesigned with a USB-C interface to support most smart phones. Won't need much of a cable, but it will need one. Don't know what this says about Red monitor developments going forward, but you can get high end phones today like Sony's Experia Pro that have 4K HDR OLED displays and selectable color spaces for around $1k or less. Hard to compete with that.

SDI 6g to 3g lcd

I heard the red Komodo is going to have SDI 6g. I was thinking to use Atomos Shinobi SDI 5" 3G-SDI & 4K HDMI HDR Pro Monitor, Here my question is this setup going to work or I need kind of Conversation?:: between thanks in advance.

The Komodo has 12G SDI in the camera

My Video Devices Pix-E5 kind of took a back seat once I got into cable-less DSMC2 monitoring, but I always found myself missing how great of an actual field monitor that device was. Even though it's now sadly discontinued, I got it out the other day and it got me excited to start using it again strictly as a monitor for Komodo. Combination of amazing build quality, touch screen and tactile button shortcuts, and high quality screen with all the monitoring tools I've ever needed makes it still a potentially great option for Komodo.

Too many posts to search through, huh? You will be able to choose the SDI output resolution, so 3G monitors should work with Komodo, too.

Curious about folks thoughts on NinjaV with the SDI adapter? Mostly to monitor - not planning on trying to record anything on the NinjaV.

I was considering this too as I have a Ninja V, but I think the SDI adapter adds a ton of bulk to the monitor before you add a NP battery behind it. I have an older Blackmagic Video Assist 5" 6G that has mini-sdi-in and will most likely be what I will be mounting on the camera as I have the mini-sdi to regular sdi adapter when I was using it on an URSA mini.

Its a pretty lousy monitor. If that's all you're going to use it for, wait for SmallHD's new 5"

Does anyone think that Komodo will one day be compatible with older RED displays Via a LEMO adapter?

That would actually require a powered adapter and signal converter.
DSMC/DSMC2 displays draw power from the camera and the Komodo may not be able to provide that much for a reasonable duration as to make it practical without sacrificing portability...
Then there's the signal conversion from the direct sensor readout of the Komodo to something compatible with the older RED displays.

But the ninja wizards at RED have proven every time that nothing is impossible!
So I wouldn't rule it out.
Obviously, safety, finalising the firmware and lining up for the regular production takes priority (in that order).

I hope Jarred or others read this. I think it will be super important to have the option to “sleep / wake up” the built in top monitor touchscreen. This would be important for dark environments and other special situations. Not to mention it saving even more battery power.

Already in there.

So does this means you can connect the atomos directly into the camera?

Can anyone recommend cables for the Atomos Shinobi. Current cable not giving me a signal..

I apologize if this has been answered already. If the way to monitor on the Komodo is the SDI out port to an external 3rd party camera mounted monitor, then how do we connect a wireless transmitter for video village?

Most Teradek’s have loop-thru/pass-thru as do some monitors and VF’s.

SmallHD’s Focus Pro page seems to indicate that it can be powered by the Komodo via a 2-pin LEMO cable. Does anyone know if this is true? If so I’ll definitely pull the trigger - I hate having to carry two sets of batteries and chargers just to have a working monitor
