  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The old RED ONE battery plate without a built-in rail attachment is no longer being sold. That's a different item.

It looked like this (the rod connector is an Element Technica item):

Looks like you can still pick up this one, in addition to the new one for the backpack, however:

I presumed that was just a temporary thing? If so, when can we expect to see battery plates with the proper connectors sold?

Don't worry Shawn, we still are selling the accessories with the battery plates and proper connector, just not the raw plates themselves.
 
I wish RED would bring back the plates. My RED Quickplate battery plate died, and it was good to be able to re-use the metal mount without having to 1) pay a full $500 to get it back to work or 2) toss a big hunk of useless mounting metal into the landfill.

Now I'm running EPIC with the ET mount + speedy clamp and a RED plate, and I love the set-up. It is so much lighter than any of the RED mounts that allow us to use bricks with the EPIC. If that plate goes, the set-up is useless. I own 11 RED batteries and would like to be able to continue using them with my EPIC for years to come.

Please, please bring back the battery plates - it is too soon to EOL some of these otherwise perfectly good mounts and the bricks. The longer run times of the bricks versus the Redvolts on a more compact, portable rig is a dream come true.

I had to replace one of my plates before too.

I like the Backpack Quickplate, but I'm not in love with paying $650 again if I just need the plate part... That amounts to paying $450+ extra for an additional piece of aluminum on the back to mount the plate, which means the old one it's replaced is going to sit on the shelf or eventually end up in the scrap bin.
 
Aside from the cost factor of the Backpack Quickplate (which is more than $650 since you have to factor in the purchase of the "backpack" part on the camera too), the old batteryplate allows for more flexibility as to the placement on/near the camera. I cannibalized my RED cradle and bought an ET aluminum plate onto which i attached a Manfrotto nano clamp. This allows me to attach the battery to a rod, a tripod leg, etc. I like this kind of versatility.

Sorry to repeat, but I don't see the product you refer to. There is one accessory with the correct connector - backpack quickplate, which states, "EPIC BACKPACK is required for use of the BACKPACK QUICKPLATE."

What many are looking for is a v-mount that can be used without the whole backpack system, for instance on a clutch.

I have the belt clip for my Red One which Curran mentions above, but I would much prefer working without a cable adaptor - one more piece of gear to track and two more connections to maintain. The quad battery module will be great on sticks, but the clutch needs some weight on the back - perfect for a v-mount. I'll use the adaptor cable for now, but it would be great to see another option.

May I predict that if there's ever an update to the line of Red primes, they will be remade with a motor :) if so, it would be the first cine lenses with motors no?
 
Or you go to somewhere like Global Media Pro, buy a vlock plate for around $50 and then just get a tech to wire in the lemo connector...pretty simple I would say. You don't need a RED plate, any vlock plate just fitted with the correct lemo. That's what I have done for a number of applications.

Problems with that approach:

* Need to also find a solution for the magnet and data relay. Not difficult, but just one more thing to do. FWIW, the data relay doesn't seem to work on EPIC anyway.

* Plate is $50 or so, LEMO connector is $50-$75 or so... Time to put it together is $??? If you don't have the tools or desire to do it yourself and have to hire a tech to do it, then meh... Not to mention, those LEMO connectors are pretty hard to get ahold of. At least the ones RED is using for their EPIC power connector seem to be for some reason.

* The bare plates exist, RED used to sell them independent of the other mounting hardware, why the change of heart? I want to believe there's a good reason, but I'm having trouble dreaming one up.

I already have plenty of quickplates, ET backplates, mounting hardware, whatever... Would really like to order a couple bare v-mount plates that have the proper EPIC connector on them. The 2B to 1B connector is a pain sometimes. The belt clip plate is a more economical compromise, but it has a much longer cable to deal with and still needs the adapter for EPIC.

Sorry to beat this one into the dirt some more... Said my piece, I'm done.
