  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pardon the crude mockup, but what I'm requesting, and I know what would be a massively useful DSMC module, would be the ability to output 422 SDI with assignable overlays and general looks. This is something that's relied upon daily when using the ALEXA or F55, so we can output clean feeds for clients, overlays for ACs, and the ability to even throw on a REC709 lut (sometimes the monitor on set isn't capable of doing so) to inform the DP how things will look for his or her preferred working color space.

Preferably this module would have all the SDI ports protected by a wing, like the ALEXA. I know this is a shot in the dark, but a lot of Epic owners, who do studio work, would love for the ability to spit out independent outputs for on set monitoring, even leaving one clean for proxy recording, one for wireless TX/RX, etc etc.

To me this is a feature absolutely missing from the current design of the camera, and even a module the size of the +1, with SDIs would be absolutely killer, as well as moving the SDI ports (plural) onto the dumbside, and avoiding us having to fish cables out and around from the underside of the Epic.

I figured I'd post, and see if there's any interest, and hopefully (by Grabthar's hammer) that RED might have their interest piqued. What say you?

This would be a most welcomed asset to my collection. Would buy one for each camera.

is that real? I want one to cause my +1 Module is kind of useless (for wireless monitor takes up my HDMI) and after that I only have one SDI Port :(

Swap out the bottom two SDIs for 2x XLRs and we're talking. (With analog gain knobs).

Also move the HDMI to the top for Wireless.

Add 802.11AC (1.69gbps) Wifi and it would never leave my camera.

Crappy photoshop parlor tricks. But I've found myself in desperate need for REC709 clean out to the clients, Clean LOG for proxies, and REC709 + overlays out to my TVLogic for pulling focus on.

There's a few SDI port replicators, but you're then forced to either run clean to ALL feeds, or overlay to all feeds. If RED produced such a module it would solve a HUGE issue with the RED for most studio work, especially where the need for lots of outputs is involved.

It's also 7000 dollars. So that's prohibitively expensive when the F55 can do multiple outputs. If there's a possibility of a unit that's a third the cost but limited to 1080P I'd be all for it!

the size is also a big factor as well. I like light and tight. The 4k module def adds quite a bit of heft. 1080p out would be perfect.

Unfortunately I think there's no way it'd fit in a single-space module like that, or be especially cheap. I remember Jarred saying that to get new outputs, there needs to be an ASIC that processes the RAW signal, as well as cooling. This is why the +1 module and the scrapped proxy module used the HDMI and SDI ports (respectively) - and even those aren't/weren't particularly cheap.

I think the 4K broadcast module is the closest we'll get. Maybe it's possible a 1080p-only version would be cheaper, but maybe not. I doubt it would get any smaller, though.

I'm okay if it's broadcast module-sized package (thinner would be better obviously). But 7000 for SDI-output is unfeasible from a cost standpoint.

So ... you can only have three separate monitor paths on the brain.

1) EVF/LCD (path 1) (DSMC brain)
2) HDMI (path 2) (DSMC brain)
3) HD-SDI (path 3) (DSMC brain)

With a +1 Module you give up that HDMI path and gain another EVF/LCD.

so you get:

1) EVF/LCD (path 1) (DSMC brain)
2) EVF/LCD (path 2) (+1 Module)
3) HD-SDI (path 3) (DSMC brain)

You can have your choice of overlays or clean feeds on each of the three feeds - but you are limited to one gamma on all monitor paths (all RLF or all Redgamma4, etc.)

what if you could have:

1) EVF/LCD (path 1) (DSMC brain)
2) EVF/LCD without touchscreen/button control - just image for EVF (path 2) (SIDECAR MODULE)
3) HDMI on the top (path 2) (SIDECAR MODULE)
4) HD-SDI (path 2) (SIDECAR MODULE)
5) HD-SDI (path 3) (DSMC brain)
6) WIFI (SIDECAR MODULE)

and let's say it cost $1900. Interesting? Not interesting?

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but you could assign HDMI to have overlays and SDI be clean feed (or vice-versa) and use one of these to distribute your signal.

http://goo.gl/cd85ey

So say for example you needed one wireless (directors monitor) and 2 wired signals (video village, ProRes recorder) clean, you could route Brain SDI > C-Box > Output, and then run your HDMI with overlays to a TVLogic mounted on camera for your AC to use and to repeat the signal as HDMI (passive splitter) or SDI loop-through.

I know there are a lot of parts in this machine, but there are several ways to route the image as is - the fact that we can't apply LUT's in camera to different feeds is a different beast altogether, though, and is mostly a hardware issue that I'm sure Red is aware of.

That sounds amazing!

That's a klooge for sure. The C-box, especially the one with the V-mount male on camera side, and V-mount female, on the battery side, so it can just sandwich, looks like a great piece of gear...but it only repeats a single SDI feed.

The main issue is that independent SDI feeds, clean, or overlays, with the ability to add REC709 (Alexa has LOG-C and 709 and I hear very little complaints about it only having two options), with ports PROTECTED and ANGLED would be the ideal. Mainly because there's already enough poking out that being able to streamline the camera and move those ports (why they were designed on the bottom...under a ledge) would be a godsend.

Cool. So is this what the profits from HOTlink and HOTbox are destined for? ;)

Make it so, Number One. And once RDC devises a solution to pass various LUTs to differing monitor paths, this will be an extremely useful solution.
